Packaging? What exactly packaging is and how can we make career in packaging? There are numerous questions around this subject and no real clarity is available. The fact is that we are just not conscious of packaging. For real success of any product, proper packaging is required. We pack our nice human body with nice clothes not only to look nicer but also to protect ourselves. The standard of living is supposed to be improving when we are using more & more packaged products.

There are  numerous questions around this subject. We would like to discuss these and also let you know the packaging opportunities around the world by way of different education programs. In India packaging especially transport pack(some call it as shipper) is not given its proper / due importance. The purchaser / vendor requires enough knowledge while making decisions. It has been observed in rate contracts BF, BS, Gms. etc. specifications are not ad hared to! Price of box and terms and conditions does not allow it to. In the market many damaged boxes are seen. In the name of competition , the product /s packed and transported gets damaged! Who is responsible for this wastage -The decision maker at purchaser end / testing at user end / and or supplier in chain?

Pratap - It is true that there is not enough thought given to transport packaging in some areas of the world. It is the responsibility of the product manufacturer to make sure the packaging is adequate, as they will be responsible for the damages and lost revenue. They should make sure the packaging meets all applicable regulations and test it to make sure it will perform adequately under normal shipping conditions. If they do this, any damage can be attributed to mishandling and become the responsibility of the shipping company. If the do not provide proper packaging, they will also expereince a loss of confidence from their customers if they cannot deliver their products in excellent condition.

In such situation, we cannot blame any "one" entity but actually it is the responsibility of decision makers of the value chain to decide the right packaging. It is a common trend that when damages happen, the user create stringent specifications and ask vendor to provide the pack with higher BS/CS (specifically a shipper carton in this case) . However the question arises, is this actually required?? NO. Instead of finding the route cause of the failure, increasing the specifications doesn't solve the purpose, it only forms a pack that is OVER SPECIFIED. As rightly mentioned by 'Robert' - it has to be doubly sure that package meets the regulations and test to deliver the product in the safe condition, not by over packaging the product but by "optimum packaging"

Unfortunately the problem is that we try to take shortcuts and then land into problems. The specs are mainly driven by supplier recommendations and marketing cost objectives. While cost is important but we must not forget the functionality.
