In response, Walki Group has intensified its focus on developing biodegradable materials and has now entered into a strategic partnership with Lactips, a French startup specializing in industrial plastic-free natural polymers.
Coveris has once again raised the bar in sustainable packaging with its PolyFlex solution, awarded “Best New Concept” at the UK Packaging Awards. Targeted at block cheese, PolyFlex offers a high-barrier, recyclable alternative to traditional nylon laminates. Its unique polyolefin structure, recyclable through front-of-store systems, maintains a 120-day shelf life without compromising on quality.

KinsBrae Packaging Upgrades Paper Wine Bottles with Advanced Sustainable Pouch
KinsBrae Packaging, a trailblazer in sustainable packaging, is revolutionizing the wine and spirits bottle industry by enhancing the sustainability of its paper bottles. The Canadian company is now moving to a mono-material polyethylene pouch, designed to make the bottles even easier to recycle, while maintaining the high-quality features of its previous design.
Various coating solutions containing different concentrations of silver-exchanged zeolite (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4%) by weight of starch mixed with starch were prepared. The study investigated the effects and properties of these silver-coated papers. Examination of the microscopic structure of the surface coated paper revealed that the coating solution effectively filled the pores of the paper, resulting in a smoother surface with even distribution of silver-exchanged zeolite. The basis weight and thickness of the coated paper increased after the coating process.
Nescafé is introducing its first-ever paper refill pack for Nescafé Gold Blend, designed to be easily recycled through kerbside collection. This innovative packaging reduces the weight of packaging materials by an impressive 97% compared to the traditional 200g glass coffee jars.
One solution is a high barrier packaging material combining UPM Solide Lucent base paper with three of Michelman’s water-based coatings, aiming to deliver robust oxygen and moisture vapour barriers with heat-sealability, designed for products such as chocolate and coffee. Another solution is said to offer “superior barrier properties” for frozen foods, based on a combination of either UPM Asendo or UPM Asendo Pro barrier papers and Michelman’s heat-sealable barrier coatings.
Two Sides initiative Love Paper is launching a new week-long event to encourage the industry to collectively champion paper and sustainability to consumers and businesses.
Love Paper Week will run from 3-7 February 2025 and Two Sides said it encouraged all printers, paper merchants, packaging manufacturers and others who operate within the sector to support the initiative and use the materials available to inform their clients, customers and consumers more widely about why paper is such a sustainable, effective and attractive medium.
