IPN, known for its popular brands Wagg, Harringtons, Barking Heads, and Meowing Heads, is working with waste management company Waste Mission.

IPN faced various waste management hurdles, including:

– Meat and fish juice on packaging: These materials were hard to handle.

– Raw meat waste: Inefficient and environmentally unfriendly disposal methods require a modern solution.

– General waste management: Disruptions caused by waste accumulation necessitate an intuitive waste management approach.

The new Schmackos packaging is certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC +) system, guaranteeing that the material reliably includes through a certified mass balance approach.

Mark Harry, Research and Development Director at Mars Petcare, said creating packaging that is both safe for food and sustainable is an ongoing challenge for the industry and as a result there is a limited supply of food-grade recycled plastics available.

The annual TLMI Label Awards Competition of the U.S. Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute (TLMI) is focused on innovations and special technical achievements. A variety of high-tech products from Schreiner Group have previously won recognition in this competition. In 2022, the first-place award in the “Tag-Industrial and/or Systems” category went to Schreiner ProTech’s Piano Label.

The polymer PVOH is not new, for example it’s already used in dishwasher tablets that dissolve in the dishwasher. Emballator Innovation Center wanted to find a new area of use and see if PVOH is possible to use in one of Emballators’ applications.

“Many naturally occurring microorganisms have the ability to degrade PVOH, when it´s put in soil, sea or wastewater, without leaving any harmful residues, such as microplastics, but only carbon dioxide, water and biomass”, explains Christian Olsson, Material Specialist at Emballator Innovation Center.
