Used masks and plastic packaging turned into high-octane fuel at low temperatures

Owing to the difficulties of recycling polymers by traditional, mechanical means, attention is increasingly turning to innovative ways of chemically converting waste plastic into either new plastic or more valuable materials. Conversion of polyolefins, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, however, is particularly challenging, as the carbon–carbon bond is extremely stable, so breaking it usually takes a lot of energy. Researchers have tried to circumvent this by coupling the endothermic reaction to another exothermic reaction to produce processes that will run at low temperatures.

New barrier film from cellulose nano crystals claims strong environmental credentials

The company derives its raw material base from cellulose, which it says is the most abundant biopolymer on earth and one AIPIA has championed as a potential basis for antimicrobial/antibacterial packaging films. The technology creates Cellulose Nano Crystals (CNCs) which provide plants with extraordinary strength and that can be utilized as a building block for the enhancement of existing materials and for the production of novel eco-friendly materials, says Melodea.

PEPSICO TRIALS WALKERS PAPER-BASED CRISP PACKAGING

The trial pack is widely recyclable and will replace plastic outer wrapping on more than 300,000 six-pack multipacks, across Sea Salt and Cheese and Onion flavours.

The packs launched across 800 Tesco stores on 1 March, with the food company asking shoppers for feedback on the new design and its functionality.

“With this latest trial, people can buy a selection of Walkers Baked multipacks in paper-based outer packaging that can be easily and widely recycled with regular recycling at home,” Walkers senior marketing manager, Rachael Smith said.

Toblerone maker to remove Matterhorn image from packaging

Toblerone, owned by the U.S. company Mondelez, said the packaging would be updated to reflect the company's decision to move some production outside of Switzerland -- which has strict rules on the use of national symbols.

Packaging for the triangle-shaped chocolate debuted the image of the Matterhorn in 1970, replacing the image of a bear and eagle representing the creation of the chocolate bar in Bern in 1908.

"What makes us unique is the fact we have a process that brings gas barriers to all types of cellulosic materials, whether they are in rolls or have already been shaped as objects, such as trays while maintaining a high rate of cellulose after treatment. How much leftover food, packaging waste do you generate when you fly?

The average airline passenger creates 1.4kg of cabin waste, which can include leftover food, plastic wrapping from blankets, or items tossed in the bins, according to estimates from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The airline body said flights could churn out six million tonnes of cabin waste next year, when passenger traffic is expected to fully recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. 

That is enough to fill about 11,700 Olympic-sized pools.

Up to a quarter of the waste comes from untouched food and beverage.
