To give an impetus to the diversification of the jute industry, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) Friday extended the norms for mandatory packaging of 100% food grains and 20% sugar in diversified jute bags for the the Jute Year 2023-24 (July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024)
The decision will give relief to 4,00,000 workers employed in jute mills and ancillary units as well as support to the livelihood of around 40 lakh farmer families

Why bananas?
Bananas are a common fixture on dinner tables around the world. However, there are millions of tons of peels that get discarded annually and go unnoticed. 

Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy, the lead author of the study, posed a thought-provoking question: “Many of us consume at least one banana a day. After enjoying the delicious fruit, we discard the peel. What if we could find a use for the peel that helps eliminate plastic waste?”

As well as this 5% reduction in the quantity of plastic packaging, Recoup’s survey also suggests there was a similar drop in the amount collected from the kerbside by local authorities.

Policy and infrastructure manager Tom McBeth said: "While collected material also dropped, in the context of the amount of material used, it shows a picture of stagnation in collection levels with service provision also remaining similar to the 2022 survey.”

Barriers to reuse

German oral hygiene brand Paperdent has partnered with Elopak to launch its range of vegan, alcohol-free mouthwash in cartons made from sustainably sourced paperboard.

Paperdent is the first mouthwash brand to package its product in Elopak’s D-PAK™ cartons, reducing the plastic content of its packaging by over 80% compared to conventional packaging for mouthwash.
