Savvy Pair, an Anglo-Spanish wine start-up, has received a gold medal for design at the Harpers Design Awards for their innovative Frugal Bottle. Co-founders Richard Leaver and Domingo Miguel have curated a selection of wines from Spain, utilizing eco-friendly packaging options like the paper Frugal Bottle, lightweight glass bottles, bag-in-box, and cans to minimize the carbon footprint.
The Frugal Bottle, the world's first commercially available paper bottle for wines and spirits, is crafted from 94% recycled paperboard. It is significantly lighter than glass bottles, boasting an 84% lower carbon footprint. The brand's design incorporates a 'Savvy eco pledge,' emphasizing clever, eco-friendly, and well-made wines. The packaging, created by Savvy Pair and Aline Nienaber from Hill and Sky designers, caught the attention of the Harpers Design Awards judges for its detailed and meaningful storytelling.
The initial wines in the Savvy Pair range, sourced from Spain, include 'Puerto Heights' (a red blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo) and 'Heartland Plateau' (a white made from Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc). Savvy Pair intends to expand its collection to a 10-strong range, featuring wines from Spain, France, Italy, and South America.
Richard Leaver, Co-founder of Savvy Pair, expressed their delight at the recognition, highlighting consumers' desire for a trustworthy brand and sustainable wine choices. The company's commitment to sustainability, especially through the use of lower carbon formats like the Frugal Bottle, has resonated positively. Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh commended Savvy Pair for showcasing that environmentally conscious packaging can lead to both sales success and awards, underscoring the Frugal Bottle's unique design capabilities.
