st. thomas packing materials can be expensive to buy, and annoying to dispose of, but one local business is trying to make it a little easier.local company caribbean packaging has been running a unique recycling program for all packaging material for 22 years to better deal with the problem taking packing materials off people&39s hands and giving them to those that need them."people have been dropping it off already," caribbean packaging owner scott martin said. "people are making good use of the program."he came up with the idea in 1992 when he saw a huge amount of small plastic packing peanuts spilling out of a dumpster and was appalled by the waste.as a free service to the community, he began collecting and distributing the recycled material free of charge to anyone who can use it. martin encourages anyone getting rid of packing material peanuts, bubble wrap and cardboard boxes to drop it off at caribbean packaging in contant instead of throwing it away.in return, businesses or individuals with a need for the material can pick up whatever martin has in stock for free."we&39ve pretty much given away everything at this point," martin said monday. "we do still have boxes."he welcomes more donations as last minute gifts and packages arrive on island for the holiday season."recycling is something people like to talk about, but they don&39t like to do," he said. "we offer them their choice of whatever they want."martin belongs to a group of likeminded business owners working to recycle packing peanuts. the plastic loosefill council, based in oakland, runs a website www.loosefillpackaging.com where people can find dropoff and pickup locations for recycled material.caribbean packaging is the only designated dropoff location in the territory, but martin offered to help anyone else who might want to establish a similar program. contact reporter aldeth lewin at 7149111 or email alewin@dailynews.vi.we welcome user discussion on our site, under the following guidelinesto comment you must first create a profile and signin with a verified disqus account or social network id. sign up here.comments in violation of the rules will be denied, and repeat violators will be banned. please help police the community by flagging offensive comments for our moderators to review. by posting a comment, you agree to our full terms and conditions. click here to read terms and conditions.
