shorewood packaging has closed this week being unable to replace its major customer, unilever, who severed ties in 2013.the nov. 27 closure will leave 77 unifor local 763g members without work just before the holidays. most of the members were on layoff or long term disability. only 23 workers were on active duty, working three days a week. a press release from unifor states the workers were told the morning of nov. 27 that the plant would be closing immediately. they will receive eight weeks of pay in lieu of notice in addition to 1.5 weeks of severance for every year served up to 39 weeks.&ldquothis is a difficult day for these workers. unifor will continue to advocate for them to ensure they receive all they are entitled to,&rdquo said ron girardin, the unifor national representative for the shorewood packaging plant.the packaging company wasn&39t able to secure future customers to keep the facility open.
