European tube industry enjoys tail wind as it enters anniversary year: Tube production stable at high level in 2015.

The tube was invented by the American John G Rand who applied for a patent 175 years ago. And despite celebrating such an impressive anniversary this year, the success story of the tube as a packaging material is far from over. This is demonstrated by the production figures for last year presented by etma, the European tube manufacturers association. Total production by etma members in 2015 was 10.5 billion tubes, exactly the same as the previous year’s mark, and thus remained stable at a high level.

As the result of a worldwide energy-saving programme, Sidel has supported Nestlé Waters in achieving reductions in its energy consumption at production sites in countries around the globe.  Consequently, the world’s leading producer of bottled water has achieved energy savings equivalent to the consumption of more than 20 ovens, representing savings of more than 1 million euros a year.

The world packaging printing market is bucking general industry trends and sustaining rapid development, as packaging demand continues to rise, year on year.  According to the International Corrugated Case Association (ICCA), in 2013, corrugated board production reached 219.6 billion sqm, of which China produced 56 billion sqm.  The corresponding sales were approximately USD 108 billion worldwide and USD 27.6 billion in China. In 2016, the global production and sales revenue of corrugated board is predicted to reach 271.9 billion sqm, equivalent in value to USD 133.9 billion.
