Schreiner MediPharm has expanded its range of security solutions with the introduction of new closure seals. These seals are tailored to meet the security needs of the pharmaceutical supply chain and secondary packaging while also prioritizing environmental sustainability. Offering both functionality and tamper protection, they represent a significant step towards sustainability in packaging.
Since the implementation of the EU Falsified Medicines Directive, tamper-proof pharmaceutical packaging has become essential. Security seals for secondary packaging serve as a reliable indication of first opening. Furthermore, the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) mandates waste reduction, reusable packaging, and the use of recycled materials. Schreiner MediPharm addresses these requirements with innovative closure seals made from sustainable film material, containing up to 90% recyclate content, meeting the PPWR targets until 2040.
Through collaboration with the Schreiner ProSecure competence center, extensive testing has ensured the optimal quality of the sustainable seal. Results confirm its performance, including high transparency, printability, and reliable first-opening indication, comparable to conventional seals.
Transitioning from conventional to sustainable materials reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 28% at the film level and achieves emission reductions of up to 35% in product carbon footprint (PCF) analysis. Schreiner MediPharm's use of green electricity since 2013 and modern heat pump implementation further contribute to this reduction.
With these sustainable closure seals providing reliable tamper evidence, Schreiner MediPharm sets a precedent for an eco-conscious and innovative future in pharmaceutical packaging.
