Current thermal packaging is dominated by conventional products such as polystyrene, which are harmful for the environment. Polystyrene is derived from petroleum resources and takes hundreds of years to degrade after being used. pluumo represents a better way for deliveries to take place. Created using surplus feathers, it does not deplete non-renewable resources. Additionally, as its other components are biodegradable as well, it has vastly improved end of life options. To take our commitment to sustainability one step further, we want to recycle pluumo. By reprocessing our liners, we will be able to decrease the need to create more packaging.
Inspired by circular economy principles, pluumo is made from surplus feathers created by the global poultry industry which would otherwise be incinerated or turned into a low-grade animal feed.
By using pluumo instead of more conventional thermal packaging materials like expanded polystyrene we create a more sustainable and circular future for the packaging industry while greatly reducing our impact on the planet.
pluumo is mainly made of surplus feathers generated by the poultry industry. The feathers are combined with a small amount of binder fibre (corn-derived PLA) which makes up the body of the insulation and is then sealed within a compostable liner, the same kind used in your kitchen food waste bin.
Surplus feathers are thoroughly washed and cleaned to meet hygiene and cleanliness standards (British Standard 2935:2001 for feather and down). The clean feathers are mixed with a small amount of binding fibre and processed into what we call ‘naked pluumo’. The naked pluumo is cut to size and sealed within a compostable liner ready to insulate chilled food deliveries.
pluumo is scientifically designed to achieve best-in-class thermal performance of any insulation material made from natural fibres. This has been made possible by carefully controlling the processing of the naturally high-insulating properties of feathers as well as optimising the height and density. This allows pluumo to trap air effectively, resulting in thermal performance that outperforms expanded polystyrene and other synthetic insulation solutions.
What does that mean in real world numbers? With adequate cooling materials, a standard sized delivery box containing chilled products can be kept below 8 degrees for over 72 hours.
POWERED BY SURPLUS FEATHERS
pluumo is strong, lightweight and naturally insulating
DELIVERING SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE
pluumo matches and even out-performs other leading insulation materials keeping your fresh food deliveries cooler for longer
NATURAL CUSHIONING
pluumo absorbs the bumps and knocks that occur during delivery helping items arrive in one piece
FLAT PACKED EFFICIENCY
pluumo liners come flat packed so compared to bulky polystyrene boxes they’re more efficient to deliver and store
