Dole Packaged Foods LLC, Thousand Oaks, California, recently announced a significant shift toward sustainable packaging.
Beginning this summer, the company says it will use paper-based materials for the packaging of its popular Smoothie Bowl line, adding that the new packaging design eliminates 97 percent of plastic packaging across the entire product lineup, which includes Acai Original, Acai Protein, Mango Gets Mangosteen and Strawberry Meets Aronia flavors.
The company says the paperboard bowls are Forest Stewardship Council certified, which ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits. The packaging change is estimated to reduce 130 metric tons of plastic per year from the company’s operations.
Dole says it continuously explores ways to minimize its environmental footprint and protect the planet, actively researching and piloting viable fossil fuel-free packaging solutions across all its manufacturing operations.
“People and the planet remain at the cornerstone of everything we do, and as part of our global promise, we’re committed to delivering delicious and nutritious products while minimizing our environmental impact,” says Orzse Hodi, senior vice president and managing director for Dole Packaged Foods, Americas. “The transition to paper-based packaging for Dole Smoothie Bowls is a significant step forward as consumers prioritize planet-friendly products and brands that are investing in sustainability initiatives.”
