Novolex Scores Gold at FPA Awards and Secures BPI Certification for Groundbreaking Compostable Butter Wrap
Novolex has captured both industry acclaim and environmental recognition with its innovative compostable butter wrap, earning the prestigious 2025 Gold Award for Sustainability from the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) and achieving compostability certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).
Developed by Novolex subsidiary Shields®, the TerreGloss™ and Terrecote™ butter wraps deliver a compelling combination of sustainability and functionality, meeting the evolving demands of both environmentally conscious consumers and dairy producers.
Adrianne Tipton, PhD, Chief Technology Officer at Novolex, commented: “We are honored to receive the FPA Gold Award and BPI certification. These accolades reflect our unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable packaging while continuing to deliver exceptional product performance.”
The TerreGloss and Terrecote wraps are designed for 4 oz. butter sticks and are among the first in their category to be certified compostable by BPI for industrial composting facilities — a significant milestone as traditional wraps using paper-foil or paper-poly constructions fall short of such certification.
Key features of the butter wraps include:
- A proprietary, PFAS-free wax blend offering an effective barrier against butter fats.
- Renewable paper-based construction with custom print options using eco-friendly inks.
- Robust water and oxygen barrier properties to protect contents.
- User-friendly design that allows for easy product release.
- Availability in various roll sizes for both Eastern (Elgin)-style and Western-style butter stick formats.
- Finishes offered in both gloss and matte to suit brand preferences.
The win comes as part of FPA’s 69th Annual Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards Competition, which saw 226 entries across the industry this year. FPA, a leading voice for the U.S. flexible packaging sector, has recognized Novolex’s butter wrap as a shining example of sustainable innovation in packaging.
Adding to its growing list of eco-certified products, Novolex now boasts more than 1,000 SKUs carrying BPI certification, including Duro® paper bags, Hilex® compostable produce bags, Heritage® BioTuf® can liners, and a variety of foodservice packaging from its Eco-Products® brand.
Novolex’s latest achievement further solidifies its leadership in developing forward-thinking solutions that support a circular economy.
