The initiative for beverage can recycling – “jede Dose zaehlt” (every can counts) – is aimed at motivating consumers in Austria to collect and recycle their empty beverage cans properly. This way, the metal stays within the material circulation and can be reused.
The campaign started successfully in 2010 and quickly gathered a big number of supporters. The “jede Dose zaehlt” logo is featured on the cans themselves for the first time.In cooperation with Pepsi Cola, the emblem “please recycle” is imprinted exclusively on Pepsi Cola, as well as Seven Up cans.
Dorothea Junk, founder of the Austrian initiative, welcomed the active commitment of Pepsi Cola: “Jede Dose zaehlt has been engaged for seven years in motivating Austrians to recycle beverage cans properly. Because every can, whether made from aluminium or tinplate, is 100% recyclable and can be reused infinitely. It is the most recycled beverage container worldwide. Practical, space-saving, and environmentally friendly. We are overjoyed that Pepsi Cola actively shares and supports our initiative and has agreed to become the first beverage company in Austria to print our logo on its products.”
The campaign is aiming to highlight the importance of collecting and recycling aluminium cans, pointing out:
- Only 5% of energy for primary production is needed to re-melt a beverage can.
- A beverage can be recycled up to 100% and infinitely, while still maintaining its material quality.
- Every kilo of aluminium that is recycled, saves around 9kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
- More than 55% of aluminium production worldwide is running by renewable energy from hydroelectric plants.
- Recycling saves 95% of energy compared to producing anew.
- Aluminium is a valuable raw material that can be reused infinitely.
