In a win for the circular economy, Viva Energy and Intersnack ANZ are set to make new plastic snack packaging from used cooking oil collected by Cleanaway.
Viva Energy produced its first ISCC PLUS certified mass balanced bio-based polymer following the successful processing of a batch of used cooking oil (UCO) at its Geelong refinery. It is the first time UCO has been used to create bio-based polymers through Viva Energy’s catalytic cracker and adjacent polypropylene plant.
We supported this milestone project by collecting UCO from Intersnack’s NSW facility where it had been used to cook some of Australia’s favourite snacks, and then processing it at our Riverstone site to remove water and impurities before delivering it to Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery for further processing.
“We were uniquely positioned through our ISCC certified UCO collections and processing network to provide full traceability of the renewable content in support of this circular economy initiative.” said Jeroen Wassenaar, Head of Innovation at Cleanaway.
Intersnack ANZ is set to close the loop on UCO by using this recycled food-grade plastic to create plastic packaging for some of its products later this year.
