Westfalia Fruit Unveils Laser-Etched Mangoes in Sustainability Drive
Westfalia Fruit, a global leader in fresh produce, has introduced an innovative laser etching technology on mangoes, eliminating the need for plastic PLU stickers. The initiative, led by the company’s Netherlands-based operations, marks a significant step in reducing plastic waste while enhancing product presentation.
The laser etching technique, which imprints essential information directly onto the mango skin, has the potential to save up to 10 million plastic stickers annually. The laser can display product origins, customer branding, and product references—offering a unique, sustainable alternative to traditional labels.
Mathijs Benard, Head of Operations Central Europe at Westfalia, expressed his excitement about the initiative:
"The laser etching technology not only makes our fruit stand out on the shelf but also aligns perfectly with our commitment to sustainability. This project is just the beginning, with endless possibilities to customize the information based on customer needs."
The project is a collaborative effort between Westfalia’s teams in The Netherlands and Germany, ensuring that the etching process maintains the fruit’s quality and shelf life. Following positive feedback from European customers, the company plans to expand the initiative across its product range.
Wim Destoop, President of Westfalia Europe, highlighted the company's commitment to operational excellence:
"With the combined expertise of our teams and state-of-the-art facilities, we are delivering innovative solutions that align with our sustainability goals and enhance customer satisfaction."
Westfalia’s Poeldijk production facilities, known for their high-quality avocado packing, are now showcasing diverse capabilities with packaging solutions for sprouts, capsicum, and other vegetables. Equipped with robotic technology, the facility offers customized pack formats tailored to individual customer needs.
Marcel van der Linden, the newly appointed Head of Commercial, added:
"Joining Westfalia at such an exciting time allows us to push the boundaries of innovation. Our dedication to sustainability and quality puts us in a strong position to meet the evolving needs of our customers."
With this groundbreaking initiative, Westfalia Fruit reaffirms its leadership in delivering innovative, sustainable solutions to the fresh produce market.
