Vetaphone A/S, the family-owned Danish company that invented surface treatment and continues to pioneer corona and plasma technology, has appointed Micheal Behrens as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as part of its strategy for future growth and success.  His appointment is effective from 1st December 2024.

The announcement was made by Frank and Jan Eisby, sons of the company founder Verner, who established the business in 1951, and who under the Eisby Family Council have managed the company since 1993.  “We acknowledge that to fulfil our high expectations of the business going forward we needed additional expertise at a senior level as my brother and I undertake new tasks away from the day-to-day operations, and we see Michael Behrens as a perfect fit for that task,” commented Frank Eisby.

Michael Behrens joins Vetaphone with an outstanding CV and more than 20 years’ experience in a variety of senior management positions, most recently as Chief Commercial Officer at Logitrans A/S, the Danish manufacturer and global supplier of high-end lifting equipment.  He graduated with an HH in Business from the University Southern Denmark (SDU) and holds a Diploma in Business Administration (HD-O) and an MBA.  Away from work Michael is a scratch golfer and has represented the Denmark National Golf Team.

Frank and Jan Eisby will remain on the Company Board of Directors – Frank will head-up a new Development Business Unit, while Jan will run the Vetaphone Academy Educational Unit.  “We are extremely proud of our family heritage and the contribution that Vetaphone has made to the global industry.  The new management structure maintains the family succession and provides a firm base on which to take the company into the future and achieve even greater success,” explained Jan.
 

Tentoma A/S, a leading provider of automated packaging solutions, has installed a RoRo StretchPack® XL packaging machine at JACKON Insulation by BEWI’s newly inaugurated production facility in Olen, Belgium. This state-of-the-art packaging machine will play a vital role in the new production line, ensuring the XPS construction boards are delivered to construction sites in optimal condition.

Six-sided packaging of pallets with XPS boards
The new RoRo StretchPack® XL machine is designed to package XPS construction boards stacked on pallets. The stacked XPS boards, including the pallet, are wrapped horizontally in a stretch hood film. The stretch hood film is welded at both ends during packaging, providing six-sided waterproof protection. This ensures the XPS boards maintain high quality and performance, remaining dry and intact throughout transport and storage.

LG Chem and Reifenhäuser sign MOU to develop Machine Direction Oriented (MDO)-PE blown films and flat films for recyclable packaging

Aiming to surpass the normal market by producing recyclable films at competitive cost in a stable process

LG Chem and Reifenhäuser set new standards in downgauging for competitive production of MDO-PE films

South Korea’s leading global chemical company LG Chem and the extrusion machine manufacturer Reifenhäuser have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), confirming further extensive cooperation. The aim is to further develop and market competitive Machine Direction Oriented (MDO)-PE blown films and flat films for recyclable packaging. The partners are building on a successful track record: In May 2024, the companies had presented the world's first MDO-PE film only 18 micrometers (µm), which had been produced on an EVO Ultra Stretch blown film line from Reifenhäuser with specially developed PE materials (Polyethylene).

Bernd Reifenhäuser, CEO of the Reifenhäuser Group, says: “The demand for flexible mono-material packaging is growing rapidly. But MDO-PE films must be stable and economical to produce in order to make the leap from a niche to a broad market. Further downgauging for competitiveness

With perfectly coordinated system technology and formulation, processors will in future receive a tried and tested, complete package for immediate market access in the field of flexible mono-PE packaging. LG Chem and Reifenhäuser are also working on further reducing material consumption by downgauging towards the level of conventional PET-PE laminates and thus making the production of MDO-PE films more profitable. Technically, this is achieved due to the different densities of PET film and MDO-PE film by replacing the standard 12 µm PET film with a 16 to 17 µm MDO-PE film. With the reduction to 18 µm, the partners are already very close to achieving this goal. However, the experts see further potential: “The downgauging limit has not yet been reached,” says Christoph Lettowsky, Technical Sales Manager at Reifenhäuser Blown Film. “Thanks to the patented position of our MDO Ultra Stretch unit directly in the line's haul-off, the film is stretched from the first heat. This makes the process particularly stable, which is otherwise often the limiting factor for material reduction. We therefore see even more scope, which we will use in combination with further recipe developments for even thinner films in the future.”

The 18 µm MDO PE film without PFAS additives was produced stably and reproducibly over many hours in test runs at the Reifenhäuser technical center and then printed and processed into finished pouches. The demand for PFAS-free materials is growing mainly in Europe as PFAS does not decompose in nature and has negative impacts on the environment. International guests were able to see the reliability of the process and the performance of the film for themselves at an open house on November 7.

Aircraft Component Packaging Scenarios
VpCI® packaging can take many different shapes depending on the component type and shipping or storage parameters. The following are a few possible packaging scenarios.

Propeller Packaging

Propellers can be protected by wrapping CorShield® VpCI®-146 paper (a USDA Certified Biobased Product) around sensitive areas and heat shrinking each propeller in VpCI®-126 Shrink Film before shipping to the customer.

Engine Packaging

Special crates and frames used to hold engines in place for transport can be lined with a VpCI®-126 gusseted bag before placing the engine inside. Desicorr® VpCI® Pouches with a combination of desiccant and Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors can be added to the bag for dual moisture absorption and active corrosion inhibition. For engines heading to especially hot, humid regions, a light spray of EcoAir® 337 can be added for extra corrosion protection just before the package is closed.

Electronics Packaging

Avionics that play such a major role in aviation today may need protection against ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage as well as corrosion. For this purpose, electronics manufacturers can package avionics in EcoSonic® VpCI®-125 HP Permanent ESD Film & Bags, which contain both corrosion inhibitors and an inherently static dissipative component.

The exhibition L’Italia dei Brevetti. Invenzioni e Innovazioni di Successo (Italy, land of Patents. Successful Inventions and Innovations), organized together with the Central State Archives, is set to open at MIMIT (Ministero delle Imprese e del Made in Italy) in Rome. Around one hundred ‘inventions’ will be exhibited by companies that have played a pivotal role in Italian innovation. These include SACMI, there to showcase the patented Cool+®, a ground-breaking mold cooling system used in the manufacture of beverage caps.
With over 60% of the global flat-top cap market and lines that can produce up to 2,800 caps per minute, SACMI brings the full value of Italian technology to the global packaging table. Hence, among the innovations on show at MIMIT, the presence of Cool+, a pioneering system based on an internal cooling circuit for extremely small molds that’s designed to reach the areas closest to the molten plastic. Drawing on original materials from the patent archives, UIBM’s current patent management systems, photographic and multimedia documents, products and prototypes, the exhibition highlights the variety of Italian inventiveness and the complexity of technological modernization. The exhibition compares generations of inventors: from the pioneers who, at the dawn of intellectual property protection, individually filed their inventions to make them available to society, to contemporary innovators who patent works of genius within multidisciplinary corporate teams and/or with universities, research centers and start-ups.
The patent history at MIMIT is organized into seven subject-related areas, sub-divided by use and purpose. They tell the story of cutting-edge devices that harnessed new technologies to improve production processes on a daily basis in a variety of sectors: a celebration of the Italian ingenuity that blends tradition with innovation, and a tribute to those who converted bright ideas into practical solutions that advanced both society and the economy.

WEIMA America, Inc. marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 25th anniversary in the North American market with a two-day event at its Fort Mill, SC headquarters. This new hybrid furnace will be powered by a combination of methane and electricity. Its design and energy efficiency, associated with the use of PCR glass, promises a significant improvement in carbon emissions. The hybridization process alone generates savings of 80%. The use of recycled glass, associated with an optimized piping system, contribute the remainder. The new process allows for savings of approximately 30% in gas consumption and 14% in CO2 emissions compared with a traditional gas furnace.
Thanks to this innovation, Bormioli Luigi anticipates a reduction of the equivalent of 25,500 tons of CO2 during the furnace’s first 10 years in service.
This technological revolution also benefits from the digitalization of its control systems and process optimization assisted by artificial intelligence.
Located at the Abbiategrasso site, the furnace will be put into operation by January 2025.

Berry Global’s European Flexibles division has reported a significant 36% year-on-year increase in the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene (PE) across its industrial, consumer (non-contact sensitive), and agricultural film products. This achievement reflects Berry’s dedication to driving sustainable packaging solutions and helping customers meet their environmental goals.
The steady growth in the use of recycled content, a trend that has continued since 2021, demonstrates Berry’s proactive approach and commitment to sustainability. Berry Global has set a goal to use 30% circular plastics across its FMCG packaging products by 2030. Berry’s target aligns with its participation in global sustainability initiatives, such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s circular economy targets.
Berry has incorporated the additional 4,386 tonnes of PCR content into a variety of their flexible film products. This includes primary packaging applications such as Form-Fill-Seal and Heavy-Duty Sacks used in construction and chemical industries and Single-Wound-Sheet for horticulture, peat and insulation products. The recycled content is also used in secondary and tertiary packaging, such as collation shrink films for the food and beverage sector as well as stretch wrap and stretch hood pallet protection films for logistics and transportation. Additionally, Berry have begun to incorporate the recyclate into agricultural stretch wrap, supporting sustainable practices across multiple industries.

In early November, the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) published the report “Assessment of the Potentials and Evaluation of the Technologies for Thermo-Chemical Recycling of Plastics”. In the report, the UBA confirmed the superiority of all the processes examined compared to incineration. This appraisal is likely to have a significant impact on future investment decisions. “Chemical recycling of plastics in hi-tech, energy-integrated and optimized plants can certainly make a positive contribution to the circular economy. Compared to thermal treatment, it can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” 
carboliq welcomes the UBA’s revised position on chemical recycling. The significant role of mechanical recycling underlined in the report is undisputed. Mechanical and chemical recycling must be considered as complementary processes. Decisions on investments and/or support projects should be based on unequivocal efficiency criteria. However, the evaluation method applied here falls short. Frequently it makes sense to use mechanical treatment followed by chemical processing. Some waste is not capable of mechanical recycling. For these materials, chemical processes should be used in the first stage so that the hydrocarbon, as a valuable resource, remains in the loop. 
The pyrolysis and oiling processes examined were compared and evaluated on the basis of operating data from the plants used as well as comparative laboratory analyses. According to the findings, the oiling methods achieved a better relative result. At an equal level of technical maturity, the carboliq process is distinguished by a broader range of possible input materials as well as a greater liquid yield. 
The shareholders and management of carboliq are delighted with the positive verdict on the technology. They are now ready to take the next steps toward a first industrial application.
