A wide range of UPM Specialty Papers’ label papers have been certified as industrially and home compostable, helping brand owners and label converters meet their target of prioritizing materials with a sustainable end of life.

he preferred end of life for any paper is to be recycled as fibres. However, compostability is an area that sets fibre-based and fossil-based materials apart. While it is estimated that fossil-based materials take hundreds of years to decompose, the industrial compostability standard requires that material disintegrates into soil in less than 12 weeks.

Path launches Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bottles to “converge pop culture with environmental sustainability”

Refillable and recyclable aluminum bottled water brand Path is launching limited-edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem bottles in partnership with Paramount Consumer Products, in line with the film’s release.

The 16.9 fl oz bottles are available exclusively at Target stores in the US and come in BPA-free aluminum bottles containing “ultra-purified” still water with added electrolytes and a 7.5 pH.

 In a unique value chain collaboration, Siegwerk, ExxonMobil, Henkel, Kraus Folie, and Windmöller & Hölscher created a recyclable stand up mono-material PE pouch. This innovation won the Gold award in the sustainability category of the German Packaging Awards on 13 September 2023. The awards are described as being dedicated to the “who’s who of the best ideas.”

Siegwerk celebrates milestone in Project Stop waste management initiative

Siegwerk supported the project as strategic partner from 2020 to 2023. Together with other partners great achievement were made during this time in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia: more than 130.000 people have received access to waste management, more than 120 permanent jobs were created and more than 5000 metric tonnes of waste were collected. The project has been further expanded with a new material recovery facility in Banyuwangi.

Im laufenden Gesetzgebungsverfahren zu Kritischen Rohstoffen (Critical Raw Materials Act) hat das Europäische Parlament am 14. September beschlossen, Aluminium auf die Liste der Strategischen Rohstoffe zu setzen. Zuvor hatte der Europäische Rat in seiner Position Aluminium ebenfalls einbezogen. Rob van Gils, Präsident von Aluminium Deutschland, betonte: „Es ist richtig und wichtig, dass auch das Parlament den Stellenwert würdigt, den Aluminium für den Green Deal hat. In vielen Technologien und Gütern, die für die Transformation unverzichtbar sind, stecken große Mengen Aluminium.

UPM Specialty Papers now offers compostable label face papers for fruit and vegetable stickers

UPM Specialty Papers now offers a compostable solution for paper-based food stickers. UPM LabelCoat and UPM LabelCoat Prime label face papers are certified as both industrially (EN13432:2000) and home compostable (NFT51-800:2015), helping customers and brand owners meet EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation proposal (PPWR) requirements.

PPWR aims to ensure that all packaging in the EU must be reusable or recyclable by 2030. It also sets out the requirements that sticky labels attached to fruits and vegetables need to be compostable in industrially controlled conditions.

The world’s first paper-based laundry detergent bottle

Unilever is using a new technology to create the first-ever paper-based laundry detergent bottle, made of sustainably sourced pulp and designed to be recycled in standard paper waste streams.

A prototype is being developed for our OMO brand – which is also known as Persil, Skip and Breeze depending on where you live in the world. This is set to debut in Brazil by early 2022 and we are also piloting the same technology to create paper-based hair care bottles.
