M eats, breads, cheeses, snacks and most of the edible foods come wrapped in plastic packaging. Not only can this create a lot of waste, but thin plastic films are often not great at preventing spoilage. USDA scientists are developing a packaging film made of milk proteins which is edible and address these issues. This protein-based films are powerful oxygen blockers that help prevent food spoilage. When used in packaging, they could prevent food waste during distribution along the food chain according to research leader Peggy Tomasula, D.Sc. And spoiled food is just one issue.
