Biffa Introduces Innovative 80% Recycled Plastic Bins, Paving the Way for a Circular Economy
In a pioneering move toward sustainability, Biffa is transforming the waste management industry by introducing a new range of bins made from 80% recycled plastic. These innovative bins are crafted from old wheelie bins that have reached the end of their life cycle, creating a closed-loop recycling process that drastically reduces waste while supporting a circular economy.
Building on its reputation as a leader in plastic bottle recycling, Biffa is now extending its efforts to the very containers used for waste collection. By recycling its old bins into new ones, Biffa not only promotes the re-use of materials but also reduces the carbon emissions typically associated with manufacturing new products from virgin plastic.
This innovative recycling process begins with the shredding of old containers into flakes, which are then transformed into pellets. These pellets are melted and injected into moulds, producing new bins that are as durable and reliable as the original models. The recycled bins undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet the same strict quality and safety standards as their predecessors, including tests for impact resistance and temperature resilience.
The new bins, made from 80% recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene), are available in a variety of shapes and sizes for different waste streams, including residual waste, dry mixed recycling, food, and glass. Manufactured by Contenur UK, a leader in waste container systems, the bins maintain the iconic Biffa red color while being eco-friendly.
This move aligns with Biffa’s commitment to becoming net-zero by 2050, as it continues to reduce its emissions and promote a more sustainable, circular economy. The collaboration with Contenur UK highlights the power of partnerships in driving innovation and advancing sustainability targets across industries.
Trevor Gardener, Head of Container Management at Biffa, expressed enthusiasm about the initiative: "By working with our innovation partners, we’re able to place even more products into the circular economy, reducing emissions and helping combat climate change."
Marcus Machell, UK New Product Manager at Contenur, echoed the sentiment: "We’re proud to be at the forefront of this recycling partnership, driving change that supports both our sustainability goals and those of our customers."
As Biffa continues to lead the way in circular economy solutions, this groundbreaking initiative marks another step toward a future where waste is minimized, and resources are continually reused for generations to come.
