The global wine industry is facing an “existential crisis,” warns Frugalpac, the makers of the world’s first paper wine bottle, as shifting consumer preferences and declining consumption rates threaten traditional winemaking.

Swedish packaging materials innovator Billerud has officially launched ConFlex HeatSeal, a next-generation, heat-sealable paper that replaces plastic in a wide range of packaging applications.

Designed with sustainability and performance in mind, ConFlex HeatSeal aligns with converters’ and brand owners’ growing demand for renewable, recyclable alternatives to fossil-based materials.

The company says LamiBak Flex is suited for further processing such as coating, metallization, or extrusion across food applications including pouches, sachets, and flow packs. Ahlstrom adds that the new paper maintains a recyclable profile and its design enables reduced primer coating needs.

Linerset FP reportedly allows the replacement of non-recyclable multilayer packaging with fully recyclable alternatives and is tailored for use in flexographic printing processes. Lecta says the material is suitable for a wide range of applications including food and industrial packaging and is available in a variety of grammages (40, 45, 50, 56 and 78 g/m²).

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is taking another step forward in its mission to reduce plastic waste, launching a trial of paper-based packaging for its best-selling Vanilla Fudge Bar. The retailer, known for its sustainability efforts, announced that the switch to paper will make the packaging easier to recycle, whether at home or on the go.

A new sustainability initiative is making waves in the packaging industry.
