Looking to save 175 tonnes of plastic each year, the fully recyclable card-based porridge pots are set to roll out across the discount grocers UK stores at the start of 2023.
The first supermarket to make the change, this comes as Aldi has also become the first grocery retailer to join a global coalition calling for a new Global Plastics Treaty to end plastic pollution.
Speaking of its latest packaging innovation, Aldi plastics and packaging director, Richard Gorman said: “Moving to card for our porridge pots is yet another step forward in our commitment to reducing the use of plastic across our products.
“We know how important protecting the environment is to our customers, which is why we are committed to making changes like this that help make a difference.”
This comes as Aldi has pledged to halve the volume of plastic packaging it uses by 2025.
Earlier this year, the grocery retailer announced it will be removing plastic shrink wrap from its multipacks of its Corale baked beans hoping to save 78 tonnes of single-use plastic from going to the landfill each year.
Aldi also revealed that it would be removing single-use plastic from all of its own-brand wipes by the summer to ensure all wipes are made from 100% plant-based fibres, making them biodegradable.
