the healthcare compliance packaging council hcpc is maintaining a longstanding tradition of recognizing a lot of packages for their complianceprompting features. since 1995, the annual event of compliance package of the year competition by hcpc is being held and comprises of two categories, namely trade packages launched in the past year and innovative designs that are not used commercially as yet. for the physician sample tasigna 150200 mg, novartis pharmaceuticals corp. was recognized. anderson packaging inc. on behalf of novartis, the tasigna starter kit was submitted with a design to begin treatment of adult patients for ph chronic myelogenous leukemia. the mwv dosepak, which is a childresistant calendarized unitdose package of 28 capsules for a seven day therapy course, is employed. an instructional card on copay assistance programs, education materials on dvd and a usb device, a medication guide brochure for the patient, a record keeper for tracking medications, and a &ldquowheel&rdquo for determining the appropriate intervals for product dosing and consumption of food are included in the kit with an innovative carton design. one of the hcpc program judges reported that the package was found by them as the most comprehensive one ever seen. the kit provides detailed medication guides, information for prescribers, and patient and financial support, while efficiently protecting and delivering the product. another judge stated that the package has wellwritten guidance materials conveying a caring tone for patients and pleasing graphics, while not reducing the risks of the therapy. this package seems to have received extraordinary attention. last year, diovan hct shellpak of novartis won the 2010 compliance package of the year. forest pharmaceuticals inc. won the first runnerup award this year for its 30day treatment pack of viibryd vilazodone hcl tablets. anderson packaging submitted on behalf of forest pharmaceuticals inc. the forest viibrydtm 30 day starter pack that employs intuidose of anderson packaging. a judge stated that this package should deliver more complicated instructions in comparison to other packs being judged, as the dose or med differs for three different time periods during the month. thus, the sole real challenge to the patient is presented. this is rightly a winning package as it is assumed that the physician or pharmacist gives some instruction initially. unfolding is enjoyable and the color of the graphics is terrific in helping the patient follow his or her drug regimen. instructions are easily accessible, pills are easy to use, and it&rsquos obvious what has been taken. the package designers are cheered. the walmart new and improved shellpak adherence package from mwv healthcare is the second runnerup. it is a seniorfriendly and childresistant outer plastic shell to protect the tablets packaged in a 30day calendar blister pack. the design has a plastic shell made of 17 less plastic for an estimated savings of more than 750 tons of plastic per year. it includes a bar code window to now enable the pharmacist to scan it, instead of sliding the blister out of the package. the burgopak rx series child resistant slider received the award for innovative design. it is an expansion of the original design of burgopak. it has one button of either side of the pack that can be pushed while pulling the end tab concurrently. thus, the pack opens to reveal the blister in the plastic tray on one side and the information booklet on the other. the u.s. consumer product and safety commission&rsquos f1 was attained by the burgopak cr slider pack for child resistance and seniorfriendly effectiveness. hcpc reported that while maintaining the blister, patient information and outer carton connected constantly, compliance is encouraged by the pack. scholarship funds for a universitylevel packaging school that focuses on the pharmaceutical industry were asked to be given by the winner of the compliance package of the year, the innovative design winner and the first runnerup. httpwww.pmpnews.comnewscompliancepackagingexcellenceawarded
