Groninger, a leading innovator in filling and closing machines, and SKAN, renowned for their state-of-the-art isolator technology, have joined forces to provide two advanced filling lines for the new facility of nonprofit pharmaceutical Civica in Petersburg, Virginia. One line is dedicated to processing vials in bulk, while the other is designed to fill ready-to-use (RTU) containers in a nest. This collaboration marks the first time Groninger and SKAN have partnered to support a nonprofit organization in the United States.
The isolator-integrated vial filling line, branded as Integra, and the nest filling line enable Civica to produce various forms of injectables. This partnership represents a significant advancement in pharmaceutical manufacturing technology, allowing Civica to frequently change formats and products. This flexibility is crucial for addressing drug shortages and reducing the cost of essential medicines.
Both lines are engineered to minimize product loss, ensuring optimal use of valuable pharmaceutical ingredients. This efficiency is particularly important for Civica, which is preparing to launch its first biosimilar insulin products using this equipment.
"From the outset of this project, we sought to collaborate with industry leaders known for their reliability and proven platforms," said Jason Winfield, Civica’s Site Director of Engineering & Technical Services. "With Groninger and SKAN, we have leveraged their experience and expertise to help ensure the quality of our medicines."
"This collaboration between Groninger, SKAN, and Civica comes at a pivotal moment in our industry. We are proud to contribute to this development and help improve access to life-saving medications," said Philipp Hauser, CEO of Groninger USA. "This partnership exemplifies the synergy of cutting-edge technology and mission-driven pharmaceutical manufacturing."
Marc Suter, Head of Sales, North America at SKAN, echoed this sentiment. "Working with Groninger on the Integra (vial filling line) and nest filling line for Civica has been a highly rewarding experience. Our partnership will continue as we provide ongoing support, preventative maintenance, and training for the lifetime of the equipment," he stated.
