"the size of packaging industry in northeast india is about rs 1000 crore."guwahati what is expected to give fillip to "make in northeast india" campaign of the government of india, indian institute of packaging iip will set up a centre in guwahati.union ministry of commerce and industry has sanctioned rs 5 crore for setting up of the centre. iip has got six bighas of land from assam government in amingaon in the vicinity of guwahati for setting up of the sixth centre after delhi, kolkata, chennai, hyderabad and bangalore. director of iip, dr n.c saha told et, "the centre will have training programme for youths, industry personnel. it will be equipped with standard packaging facility to testing the packaging materials."there are around 120 to 150 small and medium scale industries producing various packaging materials. these include manufacturers of corrugated fibre wood boxes, pouches and plastic film making.chairman of guwahati centre, s bhattacharjee added, "several packaging units will come up with the mega food park which is likely to start operation soon. presently industry here is sourcing packaging material from kolkata or locally manufacturing."saha said that training course will start in another two months as the iip has taken rented premises till the new building gets ready.
