Global RFID and RF security solutions leader, Checkpoint Systems, has declared its collaboration with McDonald’s France. The initiative aims to incorporate RFID technology into the reusable containers of the international fast-food giant.
This effort arises from McDonald’s pledge to remove unnecessary packaging and enhance recycling systems. Additionally, it aligns with the recent French legislation, effective since January 2023, intending to combat waste and protect biodiversity and natural resources.
McDonald’s France commissioned Checkpoint after a two-year consultation period
After a thorough consultation period spanning two years, McDonald’s France commissioned Checkpoint in 2021 to execute this project, which entails the installation of RFID hardware and software in numerous restaurants across the nation. The project promises to decrease waste by offering unparalleled real-time visibility of McDonald’s reusable tableware stock, enabling swift and efficient inventory management, optimizing restocking, and safeguarding the restaurant’s inventory for future security and usability.
Via product consultations and lab test sessions, Checkpoint Systems pioneered one of the first-ever food-safe, water and heat-resistant RFID solutions. This innovative design applies to everything from cups and bottles to fries’ containers, allowing them to be monitored and possibly tracked via an automated database.
Food-safe, water and heat-resistant RFID solution provides real-time data
Moreover, this database will grant McDonald’s France real-time data about stock inventory – including the type and amount of containers – and restocking needs, with up to 99% accuracy. The automated track and trace feature also allows restaurants to determine the location of nearby containers (in case a container is inadvertently thrown into a trash bin), reducing shrink risks. As of now, Checkpoint has supplied RFID solutions to over 1,200 McDonald’s France restaurants.
Julien Thibult, RFID Sales Director at Checkpoint France, elucidated, “With the new French legislation that was introduced this year, the industry’s participants faced a unique challenge. Europe is tasked with achieving a circular economy within the next decade, and this will present several operational hurdles.”
Frederic Boukara, Business Unit Director France at Checkpoint Systems, added, “As the responsibility is placed on brands and retailers to lead the way for a more environmentally-friendly future, it’s crucial for organizations to adjust their business practices correspondingly without negatively affecting their profits. Therefore, we’ve offered an RFID solution to cater to the needs of McDonald’s France, which not only enhances its supply chain operations and visibility but also future-proofs the brand’s business considering environmental factors.”
