The national association for pet container resources napcor has taken a stronger stand against the use of degradable additives in pet packaging. The sonoma, cabased groups is urging restraint until more data is available on both degradability claims and the effect of those additives on the pet recycling stream. According to the group, the postconsumer recycled pet rpet stream depends on the quality of the recyclate and its suitability for future applications. &ldquowithout the testing and data necessary to understand the potential impacts of degradable additives in pet, it&rsquos not an overstatement to say that they could potentially put the whole pet recycling system at risk. Of further concern is the concept that degrading plastics offers no useful nutrients to the soil and may negatively impact soil and sea life, sabourin noted. More testing is needed to ensure that degradation does not do more environmental harm than good, the group emphasized.
