Natural Material Studio, a design, research, and consultancy practice, is set to unveil their innovative reusable gift wrapping concept at the Calvin Klein Store in Copenhagen, forming part of a broader spatial experience. Crafted from specially handmade bio textiles, the pouch offers a visually delicate yet durable gift-wrapping solution, emphasizing reusability, recyclability, and biodegradability. The experience, commencing December 15th, 2022, revolves around a layered gift-wrapping counter, highlighting the unique qualities of the materials and emphasizing the ritual of wrapping and gift-giving.
Founder Bonnie Hvillum expresses the hope that their bespoke gift pouch will initiate conversations at the Christmas table, focusing on biomaterials' role in reducing over-consumption and promoting environmental responsibility. The design of the gift pouch allows the custom-crafted material, using the Procel technique, to shine. Comprising a mix of protein bio polymer, natural softener, and natural pigments, the biomaterial's textured and visually intriguing surface is highlighted. The decision to focus on a reusable gift pouch aims to address concerns about the prevailing single-use culture, particularly during the festive season.
Central to the installation is a wrapping counter that enhances the unique qualities of the crafted material, creating an immersive centerpiece for the public to touch and feel the bespoke Procel material. Clad entirely in sheets of bio material, the counter encourages consumers to slow down and engage with the material and the ritualistic act of gift-wrapping. Located in Denmark’s largest shopping center, Field’s, during the bustling Christmas period, Natural Material Studio provides a moment of tranquility for Calvin Klein's customers, fostering a connection with premium products and new materials that bring nature closer to daily life.
