Novelis Accelerates Sustainability with Ambitious 3x30 Initiative to Lead Industry Decarbonization and Circularity
Novelis Inc., a global leader in sustainable aluminum solutions and recycling, has announced a bold new initiative to solidify its position at the forefront of industry decarbonization efforts. The company's "3x30" sustainability initiative aims to make aluminum the material of choice for circular economy solutions, setting ambitious carbon-related goals that will fast-track Novelis' progress toward decarbonization and circularity by the end of the decade.
The 3x30 vision focuses on three primary objectives to be achieved by 2030: pushing the limits on recycled content, becoming the lowest-emissions flat-rolled aluminum provider, and leading the industry with circular innovations. Specifically, Novelis aims to increase the recycled content in its products to 75%, down from the current 63%, and reduce carbon emissions in flat-rolled products to less than 3 tonnes of CO2e per tonne of flat-rolled product (FRP) shipped.
"Novelis 3x30 is our roadmap for accelerating our efforts to decarbonize and make aluminum the most sustainable option for industries that demand low-carbon solutions," said Steve Fisher, President and CEO of Novelis. "As consumers increasingly prefer sustainable products, it's critical for us to help our customers meet their decarbonization goals in a shorter timeframe. This initiative represents our commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation to reduce emissions and lead the charge in circular aluminum solutions."
The global demand for lower-carbon materials, particularly in industries like automotive, packaging, aerospace, and construction, is rising as businesses and consumers alike prioritize sustainability. Novelis believes its 3x30 initiative will provide the framework to help these industries achieve their sustainability goals faster.
Building on Past Successes
The 3x30 initiative builds on Novelis’ previous sustainability achievements, which include increasing its average recycled content by 10 percentage points and reducing its carbon emissions by 27% since fiscal year 2016. The company currently leads the industry with an average recycled content of 63%.
"We’ve made great strides in creating a more circular economy for aluminum," said Pierre Labat, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer at Novelis. "Our 3x30 vision reaffirms our leadership in decarbonization and aligns with our mission to shape a sustainable world together. The initiative’s success will hinge on collaboration with our employees, customers, suppliers, and research partners."
Industry Impacts and Future Outlook
The 3x30 initiative comes at a time when the packaging, automotive, and construction sectors are increasingly turning to aluminum for its lightweight, recyclable properties, making it a key material in reducing CO2 emissions. Novelis’ strategy of boosting recycled content and cutting emissions is expected to play a crucial role in driving the global shift toward sustainable materials.
Novelis’ efforts also come with forward-looking statements that emphasize the company's expectation to meet recycling and environmental targets, though the company recognizes the inherent risks in forecasting such outcomes. Future results could vary due to external factors, and Novelis has highlighted that any forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties.
As the global push toward sustainability continues, Novelis’ 3x30 initiative represents a clear commitment to advancing the role of aluminum in the circular economy, helping industries achieve their decarbonization goals faster while enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of their operations.
