As a result of the update, the online-only supermarket has said this uses 50% less plastic and will remove eight tonnes of plastic packaging every year.
Created in partnership with Linden Foods, the new packaging format was trialled over the last 12 to 18 months with multiple combinations of carrier and top film materials, which has since seen 11 tonnes of plastic used across its steak lines now recyclable.
“We’re delighted to have launched a first-to-market steak packaging format which uses 50% less plastic and helps us to eliminate 8 tonnes of plastic annually,” Ocado Retail senior packaging and sustainability manager, Laura Fernandez told Packaging news.
“We look forward to continuing to innovate in the packaging space as Ocado strives to become the UK’s most sustainable grocer.”
Ocado added in a statement: “The online retail space poses a significant opportunity to do things differently as the purchasing decision shifts to images and a click of a button.
“We have worked hard to ensure our customers are aware that the new format includes two steaks by adding and enlarging the number ‘two’ at the front of the pack as well as inserting a roundle to highlight the plastic reduction achieved.
“We had to think outside the box to photograph the two steaks differently for our webshop to avoid any customer confusion.”
