DS Smith is proud to announce the inauguration of 'R8,' its groundbreaking Research & Development (R&D) and Innovation Centre, marking a significant milestone in the industry. 'R8' serves as a dynamic space for DS Smith, its customers, and partners to accelerate the development of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.
Situated near Birmingham in the UK, the R8 facility boasts a 4,000m2 pilot hall, four laboratories, conditioning chambers, an ideation and design studio, prototyping areas, and collaboration spaces. It serves as the focal point for DS Smith's Group Innovation and R&D teams, driving research in manufacturing and responding to the increasing demand for sustainable packaging solutions.
DS Smith's CEO of the Packaging Division, Stefano Rossi, emphasized the significance of innovation and sustainability for their global clientele, noting that R8 aims to foster collaboration and address the industry's most pressing challenges. He highlighted the commitment to assisting customers in transitioning to a circular economy by exploring novel packaging solutions, incorporating new materials and technologies.
R8 offers a comprehensive innovation spectrum under one roof, encompassing early technology and material development, ideation, concept development, testing, product development, prototyping, and customer pilots. The research at R8 is guided by sustainability, supply chain, and data-driven industry drivers, focusing on smart packaging, alternative natural resources for papermaking, reusable fiber-based packaging, advanced barrier technology, and more.
One of the standout features of R8 is a modular Pilot Line inspired by the automotive industry, which utilizes robotics to assemble boxes from multiple components at high speed.
Sustainability is a core element of DS Smith's business model, aligned with their Now & Next Sustainability Strategy. The R8 facility embodies this commitment, being carbon-neutral and designed for reusability and deconstruction. It incorporates solar panels, air-sourced heat pumps, and reconditioned furniture, reflecting DS Smith's dedication to leading the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy.
R8 represents a significant leap in sustainable packaging innovation, contributing to a more eco-conscious and circular future in the packaging industry.
