green plea ... coun tracey dixon wants people to recycle their christmas wastesouth tynesiders are being encouraged to go green this new year by recycling their old christmas cards, trees and packaging.council chiefs are urging people to give their unwanted trees and festive waste a new lease of life by recycling it.in turn, the borough&rsquos parks and green spaces can benefit from compost and soil improver made from the unwanted trees.coun tracey dixon, lead member for area management and community safety at south tyneside council, said &ldquorecycling is a great way for people to be more environmentally friendly in 2015.&ldquoalthough the amount of cardboard packaging on many products has gone down over recent years, there is still extra at this time of year, with items like toys, electrical goods and shoe boxes received over christmas.&ldquowith everything from cards and trees to packaging and plastic being recyclable, there is no better time to start making this year a green one &ndash it&rsquos good for the environment, future generations and also saves money.&ldquowe want to make it as easy as possible for residents to keep recycling through the holidays.&ldquorecycling the mountain of christmas cards and cardboard packaging is easy &ndash just put it into the main part of your blue bin.&rdquoreal christmas trees can be recycled at 14 sites across south tyneside until january 25 see details above right.residents can also recycle their old christmas greetings cards ones without glitter and batteries and cardboard packaging right on their doorstep &ndash in the main section of their blue recycling bin, not the black caddy.cardboard is then taken to be treated and recycled, mostly into other cardboard products, but could also be used for animal bedding.glass and plastic bottles with tops removed, drinks cans and food tins, can also go in the main part of the blue bin.wrapping paper and polystyrene packaging should be disposed of in the grey household refuse bin for collection &ndash not the blue recycling bin.any excess waste, cardboard, trees, cans, glass, plastics and more can be taken to the recycling village in middlefields, tyne dock.alternatively, people can arrange for their old christmas trees to be collected through the council&rsquos bulky waste collection service for a fee, by ringing 427 7000.twitter @shieldsgazvezwhere to take unwanted treeschristmas trees can be taken to various locations across south tyneside.in south shields, they can be dropped off next to the recycling site at temple park centre, in john reid road.unwanted trees can also be left at north marine park, opposite vespasian avenue mowbray park, off osbourne avenue west park play area, off west park road and the recycling village in middlefields industrial estate, tyne dock.jarrow residents can leave their trees in west park, at the corner of pine street and south view.people in hebburn can use dropoff points at the campbell park road corner of adair way and st andrew&rsquos centre, in church street.there will also be dropping off points at the rear of old store buildings, in disco park, boldon, the north lane entrance to grange park, in east boldon, the driveway of oakleigh gardens, in cleadon, and the car parks of cornthwaite park, in whitburn, and coulthard park, in cleadon.
