By hosting this competition, the body aims to drive up the adoption of reusable and refillable packaging by retailers and consumers.
The government-funded £60 million SSPP challenge has funded over 70 projects across the UK including the series of eight challenges it launched last year aimed at “making the plastics supply chain more circular”
Projects
The competition is open to projects demonstrating in-store refill systems for high volume liquid food and drink products including but not limited to milk, alternative milks, water, juices, condiments, and alcohol.
Any project submitted to the body for the competition must include at least one large retail chain or brand owner and involve in-store trials in five or more stores lasting at least six months.
‘Critical’
SSPP challenge director Paul Davidson said: “Supporting reuse and refill is critical to reducing single-use plastic packaging,” explains. “For this competition, we are looking for bold and ambitious innovation proposals that can help to bring refill into the mainstream for every-day liquid products such as milk, soft drinks, and sauces. It is about making it easy, convenient, and cost-effective for consumers, retailers, and the retail supply chain.”
The competition runs until October 25 2023.
