Vancouver Island University students are displaying their visions of environmentally friendly product packaging in a new exhibition.
Graphic design students will be presenting ‘Unwrapped,’ a package design exhibit “where less is more” at the VIU View Gallery starting Tuesday, Nov. 22 and continuing until Dec.1, noted a press release.
Third-year graphic design students were challenged to choose products “with excessive packaging and redesign them so they are more ecologically responsible.”
Packaging is one of the leading sources of garbage in the world and designers can reduce waste by utilizing more options that are sustainable, the press release noted. Companies should strive to use less material and wrapping and take up less shelf space while creating less waste, stated the release.
Nancy Pagé, VIU graphic design professor, said students experimented with packaging and had to find balance “between containing, protecting, displaying and selling the product while also minimizing its environmental impact.”
The gallery is in Building 330 at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, with viewing hours 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.
