This happened when Berlin wall came down, communism went away from USSR etc. So many changes and so the group was highly impressed and wrote this song. This is the study done in Spain has been published in Mail Today, India today on 25th May 2010. The interesting point is that normal newspaper is talking about the technical issues of packaging. Taht too about the glue and I think this topic is hardly taken seriously in India. So this is the good way to crate awareness. I know this issue is taken quite seriously by pharma companies in India particularly when they are buying the lables for their US/Europe export market. So hopefully time would come that this would also be considered for any product sales within India.

 This is the picture I have taken at Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad at Mahatma's Gandhi's museum. These three monkeys are popolarly known as Mahtma Gandhi's monkeys and convey the follwing message:

1. Never talk bad
2. Never listen bad
3, Never see bad

Now, can we related this to packaging options like:

1. Develop the packaging options that never convey bad message
2. Develop the packaging options that never sounds bad like making bad noise when we pick up/open the pack
3. Develop the packaging that really looks good and never looks bad

I had been reading Lufthansa magazine on one of my European trips. Flight instructor Cord Becker, a former Lufthansa pilot with some 20,000 flight hours under his belt, now regularly writes for Lufthansa Magazine on Aviation topics, In May 2010, he wrote on landing.

I am reading Simply Fly by Captain Gopinath. In this book, he mentioned what Capt. J S Verma of armoured corps told him:

"In everything that you do, if you want to earn the respect of your men, you have to be professionally better than them. You have to work harder than them. You have to stretch yourself more than them. You cannot spare yourself, If you ask them to work six hours you must work eight hours. If you ask them to walk ten miles you must walk twenty. If you tell them to go without food, you must go without food and water. Whatever you do, you must ensure that you are better than them in the quantum of your effort and competence. Whatever you do, you must put them before you. Putting them before you will always show you the way. Whether you are in the army or in civilian life, putting your men before you will always lead the way for you."

Counterfeit is a big problem but not many companies really want to come in open and admit this issue. This is the fact which is well appreciated as corporates would like to protect their brand identity too. Through this blog, I would like to inform you more about the latest development happened in India which can be verified, which can be audited and has a 360 deg accountabilty in supply chain. We have already initiated some projects in India and the results are really good. It is helping to maintain the brand value, genuine products to customers and increased sales due to reduction in losses by way of reducing counterfeit products. The system also helps to geographically point out where the problem ia happening. During my last trip to CPHI in Paris, while in Metro, I noticed an interesting advertisemnt poster in metro by Levi's . It says that We beleive it, about shape not size. Since I am packaging, I immediately connected it to packaging and thought, how true it  is? Isn't it? Think that packaging is for the protection of the product and then safe handling, it does not matter what is the size of the product. And yes, at the end of day, it must look good also like these jeans

Packaging waste is always a question running in everybody's mind and lot of discussions around. Sometimes when i visit, i see so much packaging waste is generated in packaging exhibitions. Exhibitors distribute tonnes of brochures to their visitors and then they carry those home. And that extra weight also leads to extra fuel burning in planes due to additional weight. Many a times, visitors would say that please courier the brochures as their bags are already full with so much of information brochures.

I think we can reduce this wastage by a simple effort by the exhibition organizers. The printed brochures can be banned at the show and all the information can be put in the usb/cd by the exhibition organizers electronically. All the exhibitors should help in this regard and send them information timely to exhibition organizers. Organizers  can also upload the information on their website for visitors to download.

There are thousands of exhibitions organized worldwide and any such steps taken would have a positive impact to make our plant greener. What do you feel?

Let's now start something different, for a change something which is not related to just packaging. Let's break the ice. Now we will share "Word of the Day" with it's grammatical usage through sentences or phrases.

Hope this will add to your dictionary of words which is really required while communicating on daily basis – for professional or personal communications

Aseptic describes a condition in which there is an absence of micro-organisms including viable spores. In the food industry the terms aseptic, sterile and commercial sterility are often interchangeably. The term “aseptic” is derived from the Greek word “septicos” which means the absence of putrefactive micro-organisms

Aseptic packaging can be defined as the filling of a commercially sterile product into a sterile container under aseptic conditions and hermetically sealing the containers so that re-infection is prevented. This results in a product, which is shelf-stable at ambient conditions. In practice, generally there are two specific fields of application of aseptic packaging technology:

• Packaging of pre-sterilised and sterile products.
  
• Packaging of non-sterile product to avoid infection by micro-organisms.
  

Aseptic System refers to the entire system necessary to produce a commercially sterile product contained in a hermetically sealed container. The term includes the product processing system and the filling and packaging system, give below in figure:

Advantages of Aseptic Packaging Technology: The three main advantages of using aseptic packaging technology are:

• Packaging materials, which are unsuitable for in-package sterilisation can be used. Therefore, light weight materials consuming less space offering convenient features and with low cost such as paper and flexible and semi-rigid plastic materials can be used gainfully.
  
• Sterilisation process of high-temperature-short time (HTST) for aseptic packaging is thermally efficient and generally gives rise to products of high quality and nutritive value compared to those processed at lower temperatures for longer time.
  
• Extension of shelf-life of products at normal temperatures by packing them aseptically.
  

Besides the features mentioned above, additional advantages are that the HTST process utilises less energy, as part of the process-heat is recovered through the heat exchangers and the aseptic process is a modern continuous flow process needing fewer operators.

When I completed my studies in Packaging Technology, I faced this issue of explaining people (general public of course) the role of packaging for a question “you learn how to make a dabba (box)”.

Let me share some statements on which I felt - people are using packaging every second of their life but still they doesn’t know the science and importance of packaging

“Why there is sooo much air puffed in a chips packet”
“What’s a big deal in packing stuff, you simple need to cover it or put it in a box”
“All this waste being generated is because of plastic wrappers”
“Packaging is a major environment problem”
“Don’t eat packed food, they contain preservatives

Not only me, in fact as a packaging technologist we often feel like saying “packaging is not just making a dabba, it is much more than that”.

To simplify the answer for “why packaging”

• Protect the content from outer environment like dust, light, air, etc
• Inform buyers about content, ingredients, usage, nutrients and so on (through labelling)
• Present a product in convenient way to the consumers
• Preserve spoilage of contents by arresting microbial growth
• Gives required properties for transporting a product, even to the remotest areas
• Promote a brand on shelf by attractive looks through packaging

Combination of these and several other factors is what we call “packaging development”.

As packaging professionals, our motive should not only be developing a pack but also to aware users about importance of packaging. After all a product is being picked only when it has attractive and eye catchy packaging
