KinsBrae Packaging Upgrades Paper Wine Bottles with Advanced Sustainable Pouch
KinsBrae Packaging, a trailblazer in sustainable packaging, is revolutionizing the wine and spirits bottle industry by enhancing the sustainability of its paper bottles. The Canadian company is now moving to a mono-material polyethylene pouch, designed to make the bottles even easier to recycle, while maintaining the high-quality features of its previous design.
The KB bottle, initially launched with a metallised PET (MET PET) pouch, is made entirely from 100% recycled paperboard, boasting a remarkable 84% lower carbon footprint than traditional glass bottles. The innovative packaging recently earned recognition, winning the "Product of the Year" award in the 2024 Packaging category — the world’s largest consumer-voted product innovation accolade.
First introduced by KinsBrae Packaging in 2023, the Frugalpac-designed KB bottle was a game-changer, but concerns over the recyclability of its MET PET pouch arose, especially in certain Canadian provinces. Responding to these concerns, KinsBrae has upgraded the pouch to a mono-material polyethylene version, a move expected to significantly improve recycling rates due to the broader acceptance of mono-materials in Canadian recycling facilities.
“We’re committed to constantly improving the sustainability of our packaging while also listening to our customers,” said KinsBrae CEO, Shawn Bonnick. “With the latest advancements in polyethylene pouch technology, we’ve not only enhanced recyclability but future-proofed our packaging for further improvements in sustainability as technology evolves."
The new pouch maintains the same shelf life and drop-height characteristics as its predecessor, thanks to extensive testing on oxygen transfer, filling, and distribution, ensuring it meets the rigorous needs of the wine and spirits market.
KinsBrae Packaging’s paper bottles are already being used by notable customers, including Georgian Bay Spirit Co., Magnotta Winery, and Frisky Beaver Winery, all of whom are reaping the benefits of a more sustainable packaging solution. The new upgrade positions KinsBrae as a continued leader in eco-friendly innovation, ensuring their products meet the growing demand for environmentally conscious alternatives in the beverage industry.
