florida based cis complete inspection systems inc. claims to offer a viable alternative to the standard barcode, offering a host of added benefits in the grocery store or at manufacturing level without any approvals being required. the company patented a new 2d barcode that can embed 50,000 times more data that a upc code or 175 times more data than the standard qr code. the hd barcode takes advantage of higher resolution digital cameras used in smartphones so that the information contained in the code can not only be decoded, but a voice output provided for those with reading disabilities, all without an internet connection. the code could also contain the directions for use, or the full ingredients in the product, in more than one language. the hd barcode itself can be changed into a rectangle or become dots versus lines. cis can encrypt it, so stores can provide an app that only their customers can use. even a camerabased, simple, free standing reader, used to scan and print coupons, can be used to provide a voice readout. in addition the code can be generated in any language and many of the newer smartphones can read the information back in spanish, german, etc.
