High-ranking event with the "Wow effect"
Wolfertschwenden, 30 August 2022 – With its cultivated image and classic closeness to its customers, MULTIVAC Costa Rica was on show with its own exhibition stand at the CaciaCon XXVII Conference in San Jose in the middle of July. The event is among the most important trade fair highlights for the food industry in Central America. There was therefore great interest from around 1,500 visitors in the exhibits of the companies in attendance - particularly in those from MULTIVAC's wide range of products and services.
It was the first event of its type since the enforced Corona break, and it offered plenty of opportunities to present the latest innovations - something on which the visitors and around 60 exhibitors were all agreed. The high-quality industry meeting point, which takes place every two years, is also an ideal platform for exchanging constructive views. And the participants? Entrepreneurs and top business managers, as well as those operational managers from retail, marketing and logistics, plus food engineers, suppliers of all kinds, and representatives from political and economic interests.
A platform "par excellence"
The conference is organised by Cacia. Founded 47 years ago by local producers and internationally operating companies in the food and drinks industry, this not-for-profit organisation has set itself the target of establishing a well-balanced legal and regulatory framework for the sector in this region. The organisation is also involved in ecological, economic, political and technological matters, as well as their effects on the business climate in general and the interests of the producers in particular. Established specialists in many fields use the various forums to discuss the central topics of the day, and they also shed light on a wide range of solutions and strategies.
For MULTIVAC the CaciaCon is an excellent opportunity to strengthen its own brand in Central America. “Constructive dialogue with high-ranking representatives, customers and business partners is of inestimable value in our ambitious growth strategy,” says Jairo Rodriguez, Managing Director of MULTIVAC Central America and Caribbean. Particularly pleasing was the fact, that the President of Costa Rica, Mr Rodrigo Chaves, explicitly found the time during his visit to gather information on the MULTIVAC stand about the company's range of products and services, as well as learning about the machine manufacturer's comprehensive expertise in all areas of processing and packaging.
Sparkling prospects for the future
Viewed overall, the Central American and Caribbean markets offer plenty of sales opportunities for MULTIVAC. Up to now there have still been relatively few machines in the region used for food processing and packaging of products. In 2019 the import quota of machines into Costa Rica amounted to only 60 million dollars. At the top was the Dominican Republic with around 82 million dollars, followed by Guatemala with 78 million dollars.
But in recent years a change has been noticeable. Created by the corona pandemic and the changed behaviour of consumers, the demand in the region for more securely processed and packaged local food has increased dramatically. Hygiene standards are also becoming more rigorous. And last but not least, the lack of personnel and the pressure of competition are having an effect on the degree of automation within food companies. “We will therefore continue to expand our capacity, as well as focus systematically on the needs of our customers and intensify our level of sales and support,” says Jairo Rodriguez.

• Mondi opens in-house recyclability testing laboratory in Frantschach, Austria
• Laboratory speeds up testing of paper and paper-based material
• The lab determines how the packaging will perform in a large scale recycling mill, on a smaller scale
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, opened the Group’s first recycling laboratory at its Frantschach mill in Austria to test the recyclability of paper and paper-based packaging using non-paper components such as coatings.
Conducting recycling tests in-house speeds up the process for developing sustainable packaging. While paper packaging offers many sustainability benefits, it also has certain barrier functionality limitations for products like perishable food. To enhance its functionality, non-paper components such as barrier coatings may need to be added, which in turn can impact recyclability.
The data collected at the laboratory can be used to improve existing products and provide reliable information about their environmental impact. Mondi will also use the results to determine how the design of new packaging can be improved as well as how best to improve the circularity of [our] material flows.
The tests are carried out on various paper and paper-based packaging products developed by Mondi and can determine whether the packaging can be efficiently recycled. The laboratory works in a similar way to industrial recycling facilities, but on a smaller scale. Results generated provide concrete evidence that the material can be recycled.
''The ability to provide our customers with information on the recyclability of our products will be a key enabler in our efforts to develop more sustainable solutions and enhance our value proposition for customers. Currently, 78% of Mondi’s group wide portfolio is already either reusable, recyclable or compostable. This recycling lab enables us to move closer to our MAP2030 goals of making 100% of our products fulfil these requirements by 2025.''
About Mondi
Mondi is a global leader in packaging and paper, contributing to a better world by making innovative solutions that are sustainable by design. Our business is integrated across the value chain – from managing forests and producing pulp, paper and films, to developing and manufacturing sustainable consumer and industrial packaging solutions using paper where possible, plastic when useful. Sustainability is at the centre of our strategy, with our ambitious commitments to 2030 focused on circular driven solutions, created by empowered people, taking action on climate.
In 2021, Mondi had revenues of €7.0 billion and underlying EBITDA of €1.2 billion from continuing operations, and employed 21,000 people worldwide. Mondi has a premium listing on the London Stock Exchange (MNDI), where the Group is a FTSE100 constituent, and also has a secondary listing on the JSE Limited (MNP).
Acquisition to expand the company’s industrial, flexible and UN-certified packaging offerings
Berlin Packaging, the world's largest Hybrid Packaging Supplier®, and Bark Packaging Group, a supplier of industrial, flexible, and UN-certified packaging, announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Berlin Packaging to acquire Bark.
Founded in 1978 by Henk Bark, Bark evolved from a traditional packaging wholesaler to a value-added supplier of industrial packaging. Bark expanded into flexible packaging with the acquisition of Dutch Pack International in 2017 and into UN-certified packaging for the transportation of hazardous goods with the acquisition of CarePack in 2021. Over the last decade, Bark has become known for its proprietary and customized designs through Bark Innovations.
In June 2022, Bark acquired DeeDee Pouch Professionals, a supplier of sustainable and innovative pouch solutions and other flexible products to the European food and chemical markets. DeeDee was founded in 1993 by Doortje Schilders and today is managed by her two daughters, Elke Coolen and Inge Louwers.
“We are thrilled to be joining forces with Bark and Berlin Packaging. Everyone at DeeDee is ready to help our new and existing customers find the perfect pouch for their product,” said Elke Coolen and Inge Louwers, Directors of DeeDee.
“We are excited to start this new chapter with Berlin Packaging. Together we can offer our clients a wide range of cutting-edge solutions and offer our people even more opportunities,” added Berny Plas and Erik Bos, joint CEOs and shareholders of Bark Packaging Group.
“The addition of Bark and DeeDee will give Berlin Packaging a stronger foothold in Northern Europe, especially for flexible and UN-certified packaging. It will also expand our industrial packaging capabilities in Northern Europe, including Germany, a key European market. We are eager to welcome our new colleagues from Bark and DeeDee and are confident that combining these companies with Berlin Packaging will help us serve our clients better than ever,” said Marcel Schröder, who leads Berlin's Benelux, Nordics and DACH regions.
Private equity firm Quadrum Capital has been a minority investor in Bark since 2020 and will be exiting its investment in Bark once the sale to Berlin Packaging is complete. During Quadrum Capital’s investment period, Bark enjoyed robust revenue and profitability growth.
“We are proud to have been part of Bark’s growth journey over the last years. It is an excellent example of a successful partnership with an entrepreneurial management team driving superior growth, complemented by the strategic and M&A support of the Quadrum Capital team. We recognize the strong strategic rationale of a combination with Berlin and wish Berny and Erik all the best in continuing to grow the business in the years to come,” said Gert Van Drie, Director at Quadrum Capital.
The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to be completed in the 4th quarter. All employees and locations for this acquisition will be retained.

This adjustment has already been implemented on some packaging in recent times, and the companies say that it appears
Good training has always been a tradition at Mitsubishi HiTec Paper. At the beginning of August, 18 new apprentices started their careers. At the Bielefeld and Flensburg mills, the young talents are being trained as paper technologists, machine and plant operators, industrial mechanics, electronics technicians for industrial engineering, electronics technicians for automation technology and cutting machine operators. This means that 42 young talents are now undergoing their training at Mitsubishi HiTec Paper.
We extend a warm welcome to all the new apprentices!
In the field of flexible packaging for food and non-food, sustainable solutions are particularly in demand. Bielefeldbased speciality paper manufacturer Mitsubishi HiTec Paper and Wipperfürth-based expert for pouch packaging machines SN Maschinenbau are now joining forces to offer safe and environmentally friendly packaging solutions made of paper.
Mitsubishi HiTec Paper has been offering barricote®, an innovative range of recyclable barrier papers for flexible packaging of food and non-food, for several years. SN Maschinenbau is known worldwide for first-class horizontal form, fill and seal machines (HFFS) for a wide variety of products, especially food. In close cooperation and after numerous test runs, the two companies have now proved that the water-coated barricote papers can be processed on SN Maschinenbau pouch packaging machines just as reliably as films. This eliminates the need for costly retrofitting of the machine technology.
"We were able to successfully test our barricote grades Liner MG, Liner MGO, BAG WG and BAG WGOM for use as stand-up pouches at SN Maschinenbau" says Andreas Carstensen, application engineer at Mitsubishi HiTec Paper. "All barrier papers performed equally in the process as established plastic materials. Our papers not only provide barriers against water vapour, grease, oil, oxygen and aroma but also against mineral oil migration. They are also recyclable in the waste paper cycle and are made from renewable raw materials, they are heat-sealable as well as FSC® and PEFC™ certified."
"As one of the world's leading manufacturers of horizontally operating pouch packaging machines, we are delighted with the excellent cooperation with Mitsubishi HiTec Paper and the positive test results. This proves once again that a large part of today's sustainable mono packaging materials can be processed reliably without extensive adaptation of the machine technology. Furthermore, together with Mitsubishi HiTec Paper, we offer a solution for the increasing demand for paper packaging in the market," says Reiner Müller, Director Business Development & Global Accounts at SN Maschinenbau.
Both companies will be exhibiting at Fachpack 2022 in Nuremberg. Come by and find out more about sustainable flexible packaging solutions made of paper!

A new trend is evident, particularly with natural products such as fruit and vegetables: Packaging and labelling has to be very sustainable nowadays - and also especially secure. Rethinking is the new creed. In addition to its groundbreaking concept of Full Wrap, MULTIVAC Marking & Inspection now offers two more high-quality and sustainable labelling solutions for fresh produce trays - Top Wrap and Top Close.
In Germany around 60 percent of fresh fruit and vegetables is sold pre-packed in retail outlets. Two thirds of the packs are based on plastic, and the remaining one third on cardboard or other paper fibre materials. Plastic packs in particular are often viewed critically by environmentally-conscious consumers - but without justification. Because packs protect food along the entire process chain. They preserve the freshness and appetising appearance of the product. They extend the shelf life and therefore make a major contribution to preventing food waste due to premature spoilage. And last but not least, their CO2 balance is also very impressive. The latest studies show, that the ecological footprint of a processed food product is generally up to 30 times higher than the footprint of its packaging. Within the food sector in Germany, the proportion taken up by the packaging is just one to three percent.
MULTIVAC recognized the signs of the times at an early stage
In spite of these figures, every gram of packaging material saved helps the environment. As does every conventional packaging material, which is replaced with a recyclable and more material-efficient substitute. MULTIVAC is a solution provider, which has been working intensively for years on optimising the sustainability and efficiency of packaging and labelling concepts. The labelling specialists from the Westphalian town of Enger have already set the benchmark in the sector with their full wrap labelling. Now follows the next stroke: Top Wrap and Top Close appear just in time for FachPack 2022 - two more powerful concepts for the closure sealing and labelling of fruit and vegetable trays.
Whereas Top Wrap involves applying a label to the top and both sides of the tray, Top Close seals the tray closed just with a label from above. Both concepts are the ideal choice for all fresh products, which do not have to be packed under modified atmosphere or airtight in a vacuum. This means that a label can be used to simply seal the tray closed and label it attractively at the same time. Both labelling solutions have one thing in common: They provide a strong purchasing incentive thanks to their attractive label and recyclable pack.
The self-adhesive labels on a backing material not only offer a large area for customer information and marketing purposes, they also open up a wide range of possibilities for product presentation in terms of material thickness and label shape. It is possible for example to have cut-outs in the label, as well as adhesive-free zones, so that contact with the product is prevented. Perforations serve as opening aids and make the handling of the packs easy for the consumer.
With Top Wrap ...
The label makes sure, that the content can not fall out of the tray or be removed by the customer. But in contrast however to full wrap labelling, the label is only applied to the top and two sides, and not around the complete pack. This saves material and ultimately resources, and the label achieves its purpose in equal measure.
“Thanks to a combination of cardboard trays and standard self-adhesive labels made of paper or renewable materials, this produces a pack that can be sorted perfectly into its separate components for recycling,” emphasizes Michael Reffke, Product Manager for Labelling Technology at MULTIVAC Marking & Inspection in Enger.
In addition to this, it is also possible with Top Wrap to use film labels made of polypropylene. Polypropylene labels offer the great benefit of providing the optimum view of the product thanks to a transparent window on the top of the tray. Since the backing material is not peeled off in this area, the content of the tray is protected against contact with the label adhesive. And as Michael Reffke says, “The proportion of plastic in such a pack is under 10 % depending on the label material used. The label can also be easily removed, making it simple for the consumer to separate the materials into the different recycling channels.”
With Top Close ...
Plastic or cardboard trays with a wide flange or even round trays can be sealed closed simply and securely on the top and labelled at the same time. The label only adheres to the flanges of the tray. Thanks to an adhesive-free zone or retention of the backing material in the middle of the label, the product does not come into contact with the adhesive. Transparent labels also allow an optimum view of the product, while ventilation holes ensure that there is air circulation. The label can also be printed on the labeller itself with a best-before date for example, and it is even possible to inspect the print on the label.
With an output of up to 200 products per minute, a labeller with Top Close has a particularly high output. The trays are automatically labelled on the run, and they are either fed in manually or transferred automatically from an upstream module. When compared with time-consuming, manual packaging solutions, this provides tangible cost savings and a very efficient process.
MULTIVAC conveyor belt labellers - high-output and very flexible
MULTIVAC's high-output conveyor belt labellers, such as the L 310 FW or the L 312 FW with weigh price marking, which was presented for the first time at Anuga FoodTec 2022, offer a wide range of different labelling solutions depending on the type and content of the tray as well as the packaging materials used. The models can be integrated seamlessly into existing lines, or they can be used as a stand-alone solution with manual product infeed.
Since MULTIVAC Marking & Inspection is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, an attractive birthday bonus is on offer for all customers, who decide on the purchase of a conveyor belt labeller before the end of 2022.

Available with Automatic or Manual dispensers for various shipping speeds, company’s HexaFil™ combines product protection and sustainability.Available with Automatic or Manual dispensers for various shipping speeds, company’s HexaFil™ combines product protection and sustainability.
Sedona, AZ – HexcelPack, a developer of eco-friendly, paper-based protective cushioning solutions to replace bubble and air pillow packaging and other plastic, paper or foam-based materials, has introduced HexaFil™, an innovative, 100% paper-based void fill solution that provides superior block and bracing and additional cushioning in the box vs. traditional paper and plastic-based void fill options. Available with either automatic or manual dispensing units to accommodate various shipping speeds, HexaFil™ delivers ultimate void fill combined with sustainability benefits, including being curbside recyclable and fully biodegradable.
The company’s HexaFil™ void fill utilizes the same three-dimensional hexagon design and proprietary slit paper technology as its signature cushioning product, HexcelWrap™. This method makes the paper “flex,” expanding its volume while maximizing the strength and stiffness of its fibers. When HexaFil™ is dispensed either automatically or manually, it spirals like a helix. This creates the bulk required for effective void fill, ensuring packed items will be nestled in a stable position and therefore less likely to shift during transport. This results in a superior void fill product proven to outperform environmentally-harmful alternatives and reduces the amount of materials required to ship consumers their products.
AutoHexaFil™ is the fully automatic dispensing solution for the company’s HexaFil™ void fill. The machine uses a novel bladeless cutting technique to dispense the sustainable void fill material into corrugated shippers up to three times faster than alternatives. Fully automatic with a programmable screen and electric operation via foot pedal, the machine quickly dispenses HexaFil™ in preset lengths with no cutting blades or dangerous components needed. The AutoHexaFil™ stands 6½ feet tall, and is adjustable in height to fit over packaging conveyor systems. The unit also has wheels for easy maneuvering.
When speed is less of a factor, or in applications with lower shipping volume and space and technician constraints, like most Ship-From-Store operations, Manual HexaFil™ is an ideal solution. The manual dispenser can be conveniently set next to a small packing table with the HexaFil™ easily dispensed from the roll by hand.
Both systems are easy to integrate and intuitive to use without the need for cutting mechanisms. The AutoHexaFil™ unit stops quickly and acts as a brake to easily pull the material apart in the same motion as tamping and closing the box. Both the manual and AutoHexaFil™ can be custom designed for each application with either table or floor mounting possible. Additional benefits of HexaFil™ include:
“Our HexaFil™ void fill is an ideal solution to boost packing efficiencies across e-commerce applications, and perfectly aligns with our continued commitment to delivering innovative protective packaging solutions that are both cost effective and sustainable,” said Lorne Herszkowicz, Partner at HexcelPack. “Furthermore, at a time when most of our retail customers are experiencing extremely high shipping volumes and an increased demand for eco-friendly packaging products, we are thrilled to bring AutoHexaFil™ to market as our first of many innovations in automated packaging.”

Company’s digitally printed PICEA™ Tube for Liebwerk claims ‘Plastics’ category; new polypropylene-based mono-material barrier tube, Polyfoil® MMB PP, named best Prototype.
Oberdiessbach, Switzerland – Hoffmann Neopac, a global provider of high-quality packaging for pharma, beauty and oral care, has won two awards from the European Tube Manufacturers Association (ETMA). One accolade recognized a current customer application housed in a sustainable yet sleek solution; the other awarded a groundbreaking sustainability solution on the verge of market launch in Fall 2022.
In the Plastics category, Neopac was recognized for a project with Swiss brand Liebwerk, which chose Neopac’s PICEA™ Tube with digital print decoration for its vegan botanical toothpaste. PICEA™ is the only sustainable tube solution that allows consumers to actually touch and feel the incorporated sustainable material due to the tactile saw dust and specially crafted surface.
Neopac’s PICEA™ tubes combine spruce saw dust waste with a plastic matrix of sugar-based raw materials. In total, the tube is composed of 95.8% renewable materials, and a CO2 footprint analysis revealed PICEA™ uses 38.9% less carbon dioxide over its lifecycle than traditional polyethylene (PE) tubes. The PICEA™ tube has attained Ecocert and Cosmos certifications, as well as EU Food Grade status.
For Liebwerk, the combination of the PICEA™ material and digital printing was a market first, and ideally suited its nature-loving brand presence. To add further flourish, the wood-containing tube is sold together with a wooden toothbrush – a sustainable oral care set that stands out on crowded store shelves.
Meanwhile, a polypropylene (PP) version of Neopac’s Polyfoil® MMB mono-material barrier tube won the Prototypes category. Featuring a high-performance PP laminate that provides superior product protection and is ready to recycle, Polyfoil® MMB PP can offer either a luxurious soft-touch coating or a shiny metallized body
True to its name, the Polyfoil® MMB PP series also includes convenient PP caps, pumps and applicators, meaning the entire package is recyclable in common rigid PP streams. The result is a novel combination of product protection, user friendliness and appealing aesthetics that exemplifies a marked advancement in eco-conscious materials technology. In fact, the tube is the first of its kind to be approved by the EU’s discerning RecyClass sustainability verification organization.
Compared with Neopac’s conventional Polyfoil® tubes, Polyfoil® MMB PP tubes reduce carbon footprints as much as 40%. This is due to a combination of factors, including its aluminum-free recyclability and minimized tube wall thickness.
