Coca-Cola adds NaviLens codes to packs to help visually impaired shoppers

Coca-Cola has become the UK’s first beverage company to launch on-pack technology for visually impaired shoppers.

The soft drinks giant has rolled out NaviLens codes across 24x330ml and 30x330ml packs of its Christmas can multipacks, which can be scanned with a mobile phone camera from distances of up to four metres and are readable even when unfocused. 

Coca-Cola VP for commercial development Martin Attock said the brand was “proud to be working with NaviLens this year to make our packs and the Coca-Cola brand more inclusive”.

Bacardi to remove plastic packaging from all new gift packs

Family-owned spirits company Bacardi will make all its new gift packs fully plastic-free from this month.

The announcement is in line with the company’s commitment to eliminating single-use plastic from its gifting range by the end of next year.

The company had pledged to remove all plastic point-of-sales materials by next year and be entirely plastic free by 2030.

Maharashtra fixes 50-micron thickness of compostable packaging material

A notification issued by the state government late on Thursday said that this rule can be relaxed in case the thickness of plastic sheets damage the quality of packed goods. “In case the thickness of plastic sheets impair the functionality of the product, the packaging material may be used of less than 50-micron,” the notification added.

EU proposes new rules to reduce wasteful packaging

The long-awaited proposal for the revised European regulation on packaging and packaging waste was published Nov. 30.

As expected, the proposed new rules comprise a thorough overhaul of the existing regulation and are first and foremost aimed at calling a halt to the mounting problem of plastic packaging waste.

The designs are incredibly appealing, showcasing the recognisable Minions characters in new lunchbox-friendly, square packaging.

EU’s new packaging law risks sidelining food waste, security, stakeholders warn

An overhaul of the EU packaging and packaging waste directive (PPWD), the main EU-level instrument dealing with how food packaging is placed on the market and the requirements for its end-of-life, is due on 30 November.

Pointing out that as much as a third of the food currently produced goes to waste at a considerable economic and environmental cost, Charles Héaulmé, CEO of Finnish consumer packaging company Huhtamäki highlighted the crucial role that packaging plays in minimising this loss.

Uruguay finalizes details of the incentive plan for packaging recycling

At a press conference on Monday the 28th, Peña reported that the Uruguayan Chamber of Industry will present, this Thursday the 1st, its new Container Management Plan, which will provide an incentive for citizens to return the containers, allowing the recovery for later reuse. This action is part of the promotion, by the Government, of Law 19,829, which grants extended responsibility to the producer.

"In other words, the person responsible for the waste is the one who puts it on the market and, therefore, the person responsible for recovering it," he said.
