In recognition of America Recycles Day on Wednesday, Nov. 15, JBM Packaging, a manufacturer of eco-friendly, flexible packaging solutions, launched Hydroblox™, a water-resistant, uncoated recyclable packaging paper. Engineered to offer superior barrier protection for products with potential exposure to water or condensation, Hydrobox has 200 percent greater water-resistance than a standard 24-pound white wove paper.

The move is part of the company’s broader effort to eliminate plastic delivery packaging.

Amcor, a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, today announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with leading sustainable polyethylene producer NOVA Chemicals Corporation (“NOVA Chemicals”) for the purchase of mechanically recycled polyethylene resin (rPE) for use in flexible packaging films. Increasing the use of rPE in flexible packaging applications is an important element of Amcor’s commitment to support packaging circularity.

Together with its partners, Greiner Packaging is taking yet another step towards a circular economy: In future, Rauch brand beverages will also be presented in supermarkets in trays made of 70% PCR (post-consumer recycled) r-PET material.

One of the big themes in tech at the moment is the push toward sustainability, and there’s a bunch of that on display at MWC 2023. For instance, Lenovo has introduced a few new measures to try and lessen the environmental impact of buying a brand new laptop.

The most interesting of these is the new Flax Fiber Cover launching as an optional extra for the new ThinkPad Z13. Rather than making the laptop's outer shell out of metal or plastic, Lenovo uses woven strands of Flax Fiber, which are obtained from the stem of the flaxseed plant.

This initiative supports WRAP’s Recycle Week 2023, which has the theme of ‘missed capture’, working to improve recycling rates.

According to Versuni, the boxes do not require additional protection to withstand transportation, and the customers can apply the shipping label directly onto the packaging. Their dimensions have been reduced wherever possible to right-size the packaging for the product and optimize space.

The area in which the boxes are printed for marketing purposes has also been reduced, the company explains, and is now thought to require 65% less ink. At end-of-life, the pack can apparently be recycled via the paper waste stream.

Lawmakers held a joint legislative hearing in Albany on Tuesday to examine the Packaging and Recycling Infrastructure Act, which would change how the state manages plastic waste — a focus of the state's climate action plan. The bill proposes to establish environmental standards for packaging and mandate companies with a net income of $1 million or more reduce their packaging by 10% of weight within three years, 20% in five years, 30% within eight years, 40% after a decade and by 50% in 12 years.
