Dow and LVMH Beauty, a division of LVMH, the world leader in luxury with 75 renowned brands, have joined forces to expedite the adoption of sustainable packaging across LVMH’s perfume and cosmetic offerings. This partnership aims to incorporate both bio-based and circular plastics into various beauty products without compromising functionality or quality.
The collaboration will involve the utilization of bio-based and circular plastics to create sustainable SURLYN™ Ionomers, polymers used in the production of premium perfume caps and cosmetic cream jars. By 2023, LVMH's perfume packaging is expected to feature a combination of bio-based and circular SURLYN™. These sustainable materials will maintain the desired crystalline transparency and design flexibility of Dow’s SURLYN™ range while significantly reducing carbon footprint.
Claude Martinez, Executive President and Managing Director of LVMH Beauty, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in achieving LVMH’s sustainability goals without sacrificing quality, particularly highlighting its impact on iconic perfumes like GUERLAIN La Petite Robe Noire.
Karen S. Carter, President of Packaging & Specialty Plastics at Dow, expressed the company's commitment to supporting the sustainability efforts of a leading global luxury brand like LVMH.
Bio-based SURLYN™ will be derived from feedstocks such as used cooking oil, ensuring no additional strain on land resources or competition with the food chain. Circular SURLYN™ will be produced from hard-to-recycle mixed plastic waste using advanced recycling technologies, providing a second life to materials that would otherwise end up in landfills or incinerators.
This collaboration underscores Dow's dedication to transforming waste and alternative feedstock in alignment with its Transform the Waste target announced in October 2022, as part of its broader commitment to addressing climate change and environmental challenges.
