Company’s yet to be launched Luxotique range comprises of the new improvised velvet, scuff free matte & digital lamination films. The portfolio has been designed keeping the needs of luxury packaging and high end graphic lamination industries in mind. Let’s look at the product portfolio in greater detail.

Luxotique Velvet: The flagship product of the Luxotique range, as the name indicates, is engineered to lend a rich velvet finish to the printed surface. Engineered on a special matte base film, this film is ideal for giving a premium finish to premium/luxury liquor, perfume, watches and jewellery packs/boxes. The film can also be used for laminating coffee table books, high end magazines, brochures, manuals etc.

 

Luxotique Scuff Free matte: Unlike a traditional matte film, this film provides excellent resistance to scuff marks which could develop during production, transportation and handling of the pack. The matte surface of the film is also ideal for post laminating procedures such as UV spot coating, hot foil stamping, embossing etc. Apart from the luxury packaging applications mentioned earlier, this film is best suited for laminating packing boxes of electronic goods like mobile phones, tablets, power banks etc.

 

Luxotique Digital: Regular thermal lamination films do not give adequate bonding with digital printed surfaces containing high levels of fuser oil. Luxotique digital film has been specially engineered to provide excellent bonding to digital printed surfaces, along with providing excellent optics and protection. This film is available in both gloss and matte varieties.

Insulation Films: This specially engineered metalized film is used in buildings construction to provide thermal insulation. This is made possible by laminating this film with EPS (Expanded Polystrene). This metalized film helps EPS to withstand the abuse of thermal cycling therefore assuring long term performance. Laminated EPS further enhances weather ability and helps mitigate trapping of moisture within wall and roof assemblies. Laminated EPS sheets are light in weight, cost effective & save energy during heating & cooling. 

 

Mapped & Matched Films: These are premium polyester films used for lamination of loyalty/gift cards, ID cards, postcards and applications requiring excellent flatness. These film rolls come mapped to each other for two-sided lamination and provide excellent clarity and durability to the cards.

Ardagh Group has today announced that it has invested 2.4m in a state-of-the-art warehousing facility at its Deventer production facility in the Netherlands. This investment includes the very latest in stock management solutions delivering an enhanced service to the customers it serves.

At the forefront of this investment is a fleet of ‘fully automated’ forklift trucks.   Known also as ‘Automated Guided Vehicles’ (AGVs), they are controlled by advanced software and manage the operation of the 7,500 sq. meter warehouse in a full lights out environment. 

The trucks are designed to take 4 pallets at a time from the production area to the warehouse for storage and then take them back out again to one of the 5 loading bays for shipment. This project is a collaboration between Ardagh Group and AGVE, a global supplier of AGV-systems. The system has been designed to stack the pallets 4 high, which equates to 12 metres, in deep bays. This is the first time such stack configuration has been automated in Europe.

The new warehouse is attached to the DWI (Drawn, Walled and Ironed) metal production facility  which produces 2 piece food cans at an impressive rate of more than 100.000 cans per hour. 

Jan de Bruin, Plant Manager of the Deventer Production Facility comments: “Our new warehouse, adjacent to the production facility, gives us and our customers a more efficient, smoother, streamlined logistical service.” 
“It is longer than a football pitch (or the equivalent size of 40 indoor tennis courts), is equipped with the latest software and hardware systems to monitor movements, and, we calculate, will remove 12 tonnes of CO2 through fewer truck movements to our previous external warehouses.”

The warehouse will be officially opened by the Chief Procurement Officer of Ardagh Group at a special ceremony on the 24th of March. 

 

Sidel’s customer magazine, Inline, which is dedicated to PET as a sustainable liquid packaging solution, has won gold in the 2015/2016 Mercury Excellence Awards.  Presented in the category ‘Best Company Brochure’, the award recognises clear, creative and relevant communication that has made a difference in its respective industry.  The magazine is published in seven languages and distributed worldwide to more than 10,000 stakeholders in the beverage industry.

As the result of a worldwide energy-saving programme, Sidel has supported Nestlé Waters in achieving reductions in its energy consumption at production sites in countries around the globe.  Consequently, the world’s leading producer of bottled water has achieved energy savings equivalent to the consumption of more than 20 ovens, representing savings of more than 1 million euros a year.

 

Nestlé Waters first undertook the conservation programme in 2010 when it challenged its long-term supplier, Sidel, to rationalise the energy consumption of all its production equipment.  With over 96 production facilities situated in 35 producing countries around the world, Nestlé Waters naturally places a high priority on improving the environmental performance of its processes, as well as keeping its operating costs to an absolute minimum.
Sidel, the leading provider of production equipment and services for liquids in PET, has worked with Nestlé Waters for over 50 years. The companies recently celebrated this landmark milestone in their lengthy collaboration.  This relationship has resulted in many important and significant developments within the beverage industry.

 

Focus on blow moulders brings significant energy-savings
Both companies were already well aware that blow moulding machines generally account for as much as 70% of the total energy consumption of a complete beverage bottling line.  When charged with reviewing the efficiency of the company’s electrical energy usage, Sidel started by carrying out a pilot Eco audit on two of Nestlé Waters’ blow moulders.

After monitoring and measuring the electrical consumption of the blowers, Sidel identified corrective energy-saving measures to Nestlé Waters.  One such recommendation was the installation of oven-top reflector lamps to maintain energy in the ovens of the blow moulding machines.  This achieved a reduction in the electrical power consumption required for the preform heating process equivalent to turning off 20 preform ovens.  Despite this significant energy saving, optimal performance is maintained.

Nestlé Waters was particularly pleased with results attained by the recommendations when they were implemented.  “As we achieved around 20% in energy savings, we were really satisfied with the performance resulting from the upgrades to the first two blowers,” explained Mr. Stephane Bosshart, Corporate Chief Engineer at Nestlé Waters. “So much so, that based on these results, we decided to apply a full Eco-programme to share those best practices on all of our blowers worldwide,” he continued.

Global deployment of energy-saving programme
In close collaboration with Sidel, the energy conservation programme was deployed in all Nestlé Waters’ plants worldwide.  Local Sidel Services™ teams planned and supplied all the necessary resources for the different interventions at sites in over 30 countries.  They also provided technical support for the project.  By the end of 2015, nearly 130 Sidel blow moulding machines were successfully converted with the oven-top reflector lamps. All of them will have given a return on investment (ROI) of between six and 24 months.

“The upgrades of oven-top reflector lamps have achieved real improvements,” comments Mr. Eric Baronnet of Nestlé Waters. “For example, they have delivered a reduction in the use of blower energy in US plants of up to 25%.”  Advances such as those achieved in the US all contribute to an annual saving of over a million euros in Nestlé Waters’ plants worldwide.

 

A combined sustainable approach
Both Nestlé Waters and Sidel are fully committed to achieving outstanding energy savings and contributing to improvements in the environmental performance of products.  Working on a continuous sustainability improvement plan, Sidel classifies its production lines according to energy consumption.  The company also analyses the reasons for potential waste of energy within the whole blow moulding machine, including the oven, the compressor and the chiller.  With Nestlé Waters, Sidel has again collaborated to develop an energy-saving simulator in order to rate the blowers in terms of consumption and to enable solutions to optimise performance.

 

A long and successful relationship
The history of the Nestlé company began in 1866 when the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company opened Europe’s first condensed milk factory in Cham, Switzerland. The following year saw Henri Nestlé develop a breakthrough in infant food and in 1905 the company he founded merged with Anglo-Swiss to form what is now known as the Nestlé Group.  Nestlé Waters was created in 1992 and became the largest bottled water brand in the world in 2008.  The company currently boasts 52 unique brands.  Those include Nestlé Pure Life, Perrier and S.Pellegrino, all of which are among the many brands to benefit from the close relationship of more than 50 years between Nestlé Waters and Sidel.  For instance, Sidel has been involved at every stage of Vittel’s development since its commercial production, including the re-design of its distinctive ribbed bottle from a square to round shape. Sidel has announced that its dry preform decontamination technology - Predis™ - is now available for the company’s latest generation of modular Sidel Matrix™ blowing and Combi equipment.  This combines the high level of process flexibility required by beverage producers with the reliability, environmental and cost benefits associated with a technology that has become the industry standard in aseptic production operations. 

More natural and healthier drinks in PET
Worldwide, consumers are becoming increasingly health-conscious and moving towards drinks with a more natural taste. This has brought a focus from beverage producers on filling methods that protect the quality, taste and vitamin content - without using preservatives or additives.  The main drinks currently driving the global growth of the beverage industry are those known as ‘sensitive’ products, including juices, nectars, soft drinks, isotonics, teas and liquid dairy products, which are expected to grow by a further 6% by 2016. 

PET is already the material of choice for this beverage segment and continues to contribute to its growth. Its increasing usage is due to its 100% recyclability, excellent barrier material properties that can extend shelf life, bottle design freedom, lightweighting potential and the greater brand recognition possibilities offered by the package transparency. Sidel has been working in providing aseptic PET packaging solutions for more than 30 years, ensuring the pre-requisite of product safety, integrity and quality.

 

Predis - the industry standard - now available on Sidel Matrix equipment
Since its launch over 15 years ago, the Sidel Predis dry preform decontamination technology has become the beverage industry standard in aseptic production.  Sidel was the first company to recognise that it was simpler and safer to decontaminate the preform rather than the bottle.  
Supplied predominantly in a Combi configuration, Sidel’s proven Predis technology is now used by many major beverage and dairy companies, with more than 90 production lines equipped around the world.  Interest continues to grow, with the popularity of Predis set to increase further with the announcement that it is now available in a configuration compatible with the latest generation of Sidel Matrix equipment.  
The objective is to take the benefits of all the innovative technologies in the Sidel Matrix blower - increased production output, consumption reduction, hygienic design and a wider portfolio range - and extend those benefits even further by standardising the new Predis solution for all Sidel Matrix blowers. No specific adaptation was required to connect it with the aseptic filling function because the mechanical interface remains unchanged.

 

A more competitive aseptic portfolio range

The Combi configuration for Predis includes preform decontamination, blowing, filling and capping in one unique and safe environment. Sidel Matrix Predis will be available for production of up to 60,000 bottles per hour (bph), representing an increase in output of 20% compared to when Predis is integrated with the previous Sidel blower generation. This provides a Combi for high speed production, as the proven aseptic filling range also offers a capacity of up to 60,000 bph for on-the-go 0.5 litre bottles.  
The Sidel Matrix Combi Predis FMa is more competitive for the same number of blow moulding stations as the output is higher per mould - up to 2,300 bottles per mould per hour. The electrical stretching included in the Sidel Matrix blowing station allows simple, fast and safe changeover with limited manual intervention.  This expands the flexibility for beverages producers to handle a wide variety of sensitive beverages aseptically, whatever the recipe or bottle format, ranging from 0.2 to 2 litres at high running outputs of up to 2,300 bottles per mould per hour. 

 

Always simpler and safer
Sidel Matrix equipment delivers a high level of safety and consistency down the complete line.  It is based on a hygienic concept, fully compliant with hygienic design standards (European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group: EHEDG) and beverage industry regulations. The simplified Sidel Matrix Predis design, with fewer transfer wheels, is more compact and more accessible for easier production and maintenance operations. The decontamination of the surfaces of the transfer wheel is now automatic, further reducing manual interventions in the machine.  Only the relevant parts have been retained in the blowing area to improve production environment safety. The oven is equipped with new more powerful UV lamps for external preform decontamination, adapted to higher output production.  The air management in the oven has also been improved.

 

Saving time, money and resources
Compared to traditional aseptic filling systems, the new Sidel Matrix Combi Predis FMa gives producers both the benefits of cost-efficiency and an improved environmental footprint. This ensures full preform sterilisation with no water and using just a minimal amount of chemicals. 
The Sidel Matrix Ecoven requires fewer heating modules and lamps, yet reduces preform-heating time and cuts electrical consumption by up to 45% compared to Sidel’s previous generation of equipment. In addition, the Combi Predis FMa optimises production simplicity by requiring only one operator, which can also reduce operating costs by up to 30% compared with standalone equipment.

 

A new record in continuous aseptic production

Alongside developing industry-leading innovative aseptic technology, Sidel has also focused on ensuring that its aseptic equipment is reliable and efficient in daily use.  The Combi Predis FMa is designed to offer a continuous production run of 165 hours between two cleaning and sterilising cycles – the longest continuous production time of any aseptic equipment.

This new record of extended production run gives producers the highest aseptic bottling uptime available on the beverage market today.  This allows them to achieve higher production levels for bottling of both high and low acidity products.  By requiring fewer cleaning and sterilisation cycles, the components are also subjected to less stress, thereby giving them a longer lifespan with less maintenance.

Industry experts are predicting that sensitive products will be the main drivers of growth in the beverage industry in years to come. PET is expected to play a large role in the production of these products with its flexible properties and excellent safety profile. At the design stage a great deal of effort went into reducing maintenance requirements, minimising running times and costs thanks to the implementation of innovative solutions and the use of specific materials. Innovative, ergonomic technology also provides easy access to all main machine parts, thus smoothing and streamlining workflows. Other major innovations are seen in the KUBE labelling stations, designed to be ergonomic and maximise precision and reliability over time. 

Equally innovative is the central support beam for adjusting height, depth, application angle and parallelism. Station interchange has been made easier thanks to the use of electromagnets, which ensure precise, secure anchoring of station to carousel.

Web retailers prefer packaging their special products in solid board enriched with tomato plants. The “Verse Oogst Box”, an online ordering service from The Greenery for directly ordering fresh fruits and vegetables from the grower, is a great example of this. The “Verse Oogst Box” is made from solid board enriched with tomato plant fibres and can hold 10 kg of fruit and vegetables. The Harvest House growers cooperative also packages tomatoes in solid board bowls enriched with tomato plant fibres. Harvest House delivers these bowls, in two variants of 250 g and 750 g, to HelloFresh, the international online ordering service for fresh meal ingredients.

The consumer who ends up with this type of packaging via these online ordering services is made aware of a special development. Once a year, a residual flow of 85 million kg of tomato plants is released and composted by the growers. Instead of composting, it is possible now to turn these plants into a valuable raw material that, in combination with old paper fibres, can be processed into solid board. This unique production process takes place at the SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS plants, where the solid board is further converted into a large variety of packaging.
This allows tomatoes to be packaged in their own plant fibre! In addition, the packaging made of this solid board enriched with tomato plant fibres, is totally recyclable. Thus the raw materials are reused to the maximum extent and we contribute to the circular economy.

“The world of packaging is moving faster than ever. Success comes down to being aware of trends in other product categories, keeping in mind the world that shoppers and consumers live in, how they make decisions, how they use products, and bringing new ideas to your space,” highlighted Keenan Thompson, Director of Innovation NA Packaging, Anheuser Busch InBev. 

Thompson gives us his take on staying innovative and competitive. 

How do you stay innovative in this competitive environment?

When you look across multiple categories, trends seem to be fairly universal. You have to be aware of all categories, not just the one you are working within, and keep your eyes open to what you can bring into your own space. 

The pack is an integral part of the complete branded product experience; material supply, production and converting of the different pack elements through your machinery, distribution, retail, shopper and user experience, even how it is disposed of or reused. To be competitive, you must understand how the product and pack interact with that value chain all the way through. 

What are some of the innovative packaging solutions and technologies that manufacturers should pay more attention to?

You win big when you take the materials necessary for your package, and find ways to reduce cost while adding value to the product. The technologies really pushing into that space will be the technologies of the future. 

What advice do you have for establishing brand loyalty?

Consistency is key for establishing and maintaining brand loyalty. To build brands that are thought of and get noticed, you have to discover the distinct elements of your brand and make them part of everyone’s everyday memory structure, so when they are shopping and searching for a solution, you are the one that drives the conversion at shelf. Being the most relevant option with the environment is also key. 

How can pack engagement be enhanced?

Pack is a marketing tool. It can be a communication platform at shelf, it can add user excitement through innovation or amplify marketing programs by being part of the core creative idea. You can also be more engaging just by being a better fit for an occasion than the competition. 

In the world of beer, besides the shopping or usage occasions, there is transport, storage, inventory and so on. Engaging a consumer and better meeting needs through all those touch points is key for us.

What tools do you utilise to communicate with customers?

It is about using certain design principles to communicate to the shopper at the shelf. Number one is color. Our two biggest brands, Budweiser and Bud Light, are very red and very blue. These colors stand out. Besides color, the packaging shape, materials and imagery, and knowing the importance of each, can help people notice your product.

How are consumer needs changing? How do you capture their attention?

There is more choice in the market, so you have to make sure you are part of a consumer’s relevant repertoire. 

Creativity is reverse entropy, very few things out there are brand new. We must look around us to get ideas and consider how shoppers make decisions and how consumers use products.

Inline, the Sidel customer-facing magazine which is fully dedicated to PET, has won yet another award with the announcement that it has achieved gold in the 2015 Stevie® International Business Awards.

The magazine, which is published in seven languages and distributed worldwide to more than 10,000 stakeholders in the beverage industry, covers a wide range of current topics relating to PET as a sustainable liquid packaging solution.  Receiving gold in the category ‘Best Marketing or Sales Brochure or Kit’ is the latest in a number of awards which include previous Gold and Silver Stevie Awards and a Silver Astrid Award.

With the deadlines for compliance with two major pieces of legislation fundamentally affecting the pharmaceutical sector, a leading industry analyst has made a strong plea for the industry to adopt more Active and Intelligent Packaging (A&IP) solutions ‘to deal with the traceability requirements of today and the authentication and compliance issues just around the corner’. Commenting in advance of the AIPIA Congress on A&IP In Action, Dick de Koning, a leading independent packaging analyst, said “Both the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) in the USA and the EU’s Falsified Medicines Directive become fully operational in 2017 and 2016 respectively. I would like to see a more proactive approach from the drug companies, looking beyond traceability issues, to fully embrace A&IP technologies which can address all the problems they face in one go. Currently their piecemeal approach will end up costing more money than if they bite the bullet now.” Several topics at the AIPIA will cover solutions for the pharmaceutical sector and look at other aspects of A&IP technologies as well as offering a more holistic approach to the industry’s ‘headaches’. For the last 8 years Confrérie Clinique has been working on its MEDICCINE™ technology, an integrated mHealth system to measure therapy adherence of patients. This has been based upon various packaging media such as blisters, bottles and syringes. It is smart packaging, that is able to monitor storage conditions and intake of solid & liquid medication by using a specially designed microchip. Co-founder Jos Geboers will explain how it works. The integration of printed electronics into packaging opens up a wide range of market opportunities to create added value for the packaging industry. Sandy Gunn from the Centre for Process Innovation will explain how printed electronics can be incorporated within packaging to improve patient outcomes and compliance by providing information and validation around anti-counterfeiting, product tampering and also whether the contents are fit for consumption. CPI is working alongside commercial partners in order to develop intelligent packaging for a number of market sectors including the pharmaceutical industry. According to Jeremy Laurens, co-founder of Blulog, five out of 10 of the most sold pharmaceutical products need to be kept between 2 and 8°C from the producer to the dispensary. Currently isothermal packaging and temperature dataloggers are sold separately. What if they could be combined ? The use of NFC technology makes it possible to have very thin temperature dataloggers directly integrated into the isothermal packaging, these can not only track temperature, but also logistical information, from tracking numbers to GPS coordinates, accessed through a smartphone. “Here are just a few examples of how multiple solutions can be combined into one packaging device to aid pharmaceutical authenticity, security and compliance,” added de Koning. “I hope plenty of the sector’s packaging experts see this Congress as a vital opportunity to gather information and get into the A&IP network,” he said.

The World Packaging Organisation is a non-profit, non-governmental, international federation of national packaging institutes and associations, regional packaging federations and other interested parties including corporations and trade associations. WorldStars are presented only to those packages which, having already won recognition in a national competition, are compared by an expert panel of judges to similar packages from around the world. Awards are based on the judges' consensus that a package is superior in its own right and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison.

INS.Truly innovative design concepts pushing utilization of high-strength steels to the limits characterize this year’s four finalists for the Swedish Steel Prize. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Stockholm on May 11.

Fermel, mining vehicle, South Africa

Fermel has developed a unique range of multi-purpose vehicles for safe transportation in mines. The vehicles meet new, more stringent safety legislation and are intended to replace the re-built standard vehicles currently used. Design optimization of the entire vehicle, including the car body, has given superior performance regarding personal safety, higher payload, agility, damage resistance, reliability and service life. JMG Cranes, electrical pick and carry crane, Italy

JMG Cranes has developed a unique, highly compact crane with an extended field of application. The lean design combined with electric drive train and excellent maneuverability allows it to be used both indoors and outdoors. This powerful pick and carry crane has great lifting capacity. Wabash National’s new rear impact guard for trucks and semi-trailers exceeds North American standards also for demanding off-set impact.
