Bottles or containers of today are getting updated with flip cap openers. The use of normal screw bottle caps has been reduced with more easy and advanced cap designs in the market. But with new upcoming design, new strategies should also be appointed for testing its quality. Flip cap opening tester is designed to test the strength amount utilized for opening the flip cap of bottles and containers.
Flip Cap Opening Tester is utilized for assessing the flip cap strength, which is an important criterion for quality assurance of the product. A uniform amount of force is applied to the flip Cap specimen and the test data is recorded through an accurate force-measuring device. Once the peak level of force is recorded successfully on the force scale, a reading will be automatically stored in gauge memory.
For a number of “semi-solid” Cosmetics, Food and FMCG products like moisturizers, gels, and shampoos, etc flip caps are a standard closure. Tension and compression testing is done to evaluate opening and closing. This process helps in ensuring that leaks are prevented at the time of use (usually when contents are upside-down and their weight is used on the flip-cap), while being easy enough to be opened and closed by the end user. Moreover, the hinge strength can also be tested to check whether it can withstand frequent use without breaking off.
Peel adhesion is defined as the force needed to "Peel" an adhesion tape from any given surface whether flexible ,smooth ,or rigid. This "Peel" force is always and only measured across the width of the taped substrate, making it more difficult seprating force to resist. It is important to understand the peel adhesion factor, as it can serve as a guide for choosing the right tape for the application.
Generally the goal of a peel test is to determine the adhesive strength of the material or the strength of the adhesive bond between two materials. This adhesive strength may be referred to as the “stickiness” of a material as it is a measure of the samples resistance to separation from one another after the adhesive has been applied. This measured value may then be used to determine if the adhesive bond is strong enough or too strong for the application and whether a different adhesive or bonding process is needed.
Peel adhesion is reported in KN force. Peel Testers or Peel Testing Machines are universal test machines specially configured to determine the adhesive Peel strength or the strength of the adhesive bond between the materials.
Coefficient of Friction (COF) is a simple ratio equal to the force required to slide on surface over another, divided by the force perpendicular to the contacting surfaces.
It’s a unitless coefficient. We can see that coefficient of friction should be between 0 and 1. Higher values indicate more resistance to sliding. There are two kinds of coefficient of friction – static and kinetic COF. Static COF is a higher value and is related to the force to get movement started.
Packaging materials are typically cut, fed, and passed through production at extreme speeds. Films and cardboard are usually coated with inks and lacquers, which impact their surface characteristics. Materials that have an uneven or rough surface texture will generate a considerable amount of friction and are likely to affect the production line efficiency. Testing the surface’s frictional qualities would not only ensure that the raw materials used are appropriate for machinery but would also prevent the possibilities of damage or jams caused at the time of the packaging process.
A packaging film’s “coefficient of friction” (COF) provides a relative indication of frictional characteristics. Controlling COF gives processors the ability to optimize performance and avoid problems in forming, transporting, and storing of packages.
• In HFFS (horizontal form fill and seal) systems, too much friction of the sealant side of the film can lead to film dragging or jamming as it passes over metal plates.
• In VFFS (vertical form fill and seal) systems, too much friction of the sealant side of the film can cause poor film feeding over metal forming collars, inconsistent package sizes, and squealing.
• In either system, too much friction can result in lateral slipping that leads to poor seals (leakers).
• Too little friction on the outside can cause packages to slip or fall-off-of inclined conveyor belts.
• Too much friction on the outside can slow packages’ progress down delivery chutes.
• Too little friction on the outside can result in packages sliding off of stacks or pallets.
1. Wall Thickness Gauge, WTG - To measure the thickness of the bottles (PET/PP/HDPE/PVC) across various peripheries / curvatures, the wall thickness gauge is used on the wide scale in the industry.
2. Universal Testing Machine, UTM - To measure the top load of bottles and the flip opening/closing force of the snap fit caps, primarily, the Universal Testing Machine is used.
3. Torque Tester, TT - To measure the torque required to open a closed cap of bottles, the Torque Tester is extensively used.
4. Standing Vernier Caliper, SVC - To measure the height of the bottles at various positions, the Standing Vernier Caliper is used.
5. Vacuum Leak Tester, VLT - To ensure that the final bottle designed is free from any leakage, the Vacuum Leak Tester is used.
Packaging is the first thing a customer observes when he is shopping for any product. Packaging could include the box that the product is shipped in or the shopping bag the item is placed in at the store. Inner packaging is what keeps your product nestled safely in the outer packaging.
Product packaging works as a silent salesman because consumers often make a psychological connection with it. Packaging may appeal to consumers if it represents something that’s important to them or symbolizes someone they aspire to be. Shoppers who have environmental concerns may choose a product packaged in recycled materials. People who have active lifestyles may select a product because the packaging includes a photo of an athlete who epitomizes vitality.
When your feet land in a shop, there’s thousands of things you notice. The particular smell, the lights inside and the dark corners, the exposition of the products, the employees, their clothes, etc.
All of these factors create a brand image. Moving to the e-commerce model means that these factors no longer weigh in, because they simply cease to exist. Their place is taken by the website’s design, the online customer's service etc.
This is also the moment when packaging begins to play an increasingly important role as a sales tool. Sending a box is one thing, but sending it to make a memorable impression is another. Making an impression eventually leads to making a bond. Therefore, a luxury product requires a distinct packaging solution.
Packaging of a product is, therefore, an important member of the sales team which can drive the product sales through the shelf, retail stores, or even e-commerce.
Relation between packaging and consumer
Packaging is an essential part of product mix and packaging decision is a crucial one in manufacturing industries for them to achieve started marketing objectives and a keen competitive business environment.
The first point of a contact between the customer and the product is the packaging . it gives a long lasting impression not only by the product but also the manufacturer. In the Today’s market there is a competition in virtually products categories, packaging is often the customer’s point of contact.
Consumer Decision Making
On daily basis each of us make different , diverse and numerous about every aspects of product acquisition ranging from what type of product to buy and where to buy the product. The presence of two many types of products, brand and sources of purchase make decision making necessary.
Consumer’s buying behavior
Buying behavior refers to all the decisions people and business make when they buy products or services.
According to classical economic theory, people make their buying decision based on a rational analysis of their own self- interest in the situation. The buying behavior of an individual can be predicted by analyzing what source of action would most benefit that individual. The same principle applies to buy decisions of groups individual as well as to the buying decisions of groups of individual such as businesses.
Similarly, Packaging could be treated as one of the most valuable tool in today’s marketing communication, necessitating more details analysis of its elements and an impact of those elements on consumer purchasing decision. A good and an attractive product packaging has greater tendency to enhance positive purchasing decision towards the product.
Packaging has a better reach than advertising does, and can set a brand apart from its competitors. It promotes and reinforce the purchase decision not only at the point of purchase, but also every time the product is used . packaging can even drive the brand choice of product.
As a matter of facts, people are becoming more and more demanding . Packaging has been gradually shown its important role in a way to serve consumers more by providing information and delivery functions. With its different functional to ease and to communicate with consumers’ attention and their perception on the product quality.

Packaging has positive and negative impact on the environment. The negative impact include resources use and the effect of packaging related wastes and emissions. The positive impact is that packaging consumer goods facilities their distribution and thus make it possible to obtain goods otherwise not accessible. Environmentally conscious packaging enables satisfying human needs on a effective way.
The protective function is more and more important in the present trend of increasing urbanization. The use of active packaging became widespread, in which packaging combined with the use of means that assure the preservation of the product ,such as protective gas, oxygen removal and so on. It is the positive impact on the environment
Package recycling – The concept of recycling to conserve resources is based on assumption that a recycling requires fewer raw material and less energy and generates fewer emissions into the environment than manufacturing new material. Some packaging material can be recycled an infinity number of times, other just 2 or3 times –
Paper – 5 to 7 times
Cardboard- 3to 4 times
Glass- infinitly
Plastic – 1 or 2
Aluminium, copper, and other metals – infinitly
Recycling of package is the important and positive impact on the environment ,many companies are taking action seriously on this method . Recently Unilever take a initiative to develop new technology to tackle the global issue of plastic sachet waste because hundreds of billions of plastic sachet are thrown away globally every year and 14% of all plastic package is recycled globally. It is a positive action to save the environment and impact also will be the positive.
Many companies are connecting with Loop for recycling the plastic materials and in other side Procter & Gamble has launched the FAIRY &WINDEX OCEAN PLASTIC BOTTLE MADE FROM post consumer recycled plastic and ocean plastic . It will be made from 10% ocean plastic, collected from the ocean and beaches around the world ,and 90% post consumer recycled plastic. It is a positive action for safety of the environment.
I hope all packaging industries will be continue in this action than we can protect our environment. Pollution and population are two facts that harmful for our environment ,we can not control the population but at least we can control the pollution than will be the positive impact on the environment.
