9 August 2022 – Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has collaborated with Essity and Dow to create new, recyclable secondary packaging for Essity’s feminine care products, using renewable materials and post-consumer recycled content that reduces use of fossil-based materials.
Essity’s feminine care towels were previously packed in bags that already used 50% renewable materials. Extensive research and testing by Mondi however, resulted in the recommendation of a new solution that aligns with Essity’s packaging goals: to work towards 100% recyclability and to use up to 85% biomass, renewable or recycled material in all bags where up to 25% are recycled plastics.
The new packaging contributes to these sustainability goals by using a renewable material and by-product from the paper making industry that is produced from circular feedstock based on the ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) mass balance approach. The innovative packaging also contains mechanically recycled content from post-consumer material. Mondi worked with long-term supplier Dow and other companies along the value chain to find the most suitable resin formulation for this solution. The end result is an extruded film that is printed on and converted into a bag.
Providing the same high-level of protection as the previous alternative, the solution prevents moisture and light damaging the feminine care range, has strong sealing properties and delivers outstanding print quality to maintain on-shelf appeal for Essity’s European recognised brands, such as Bodyform, Libresse, Nana and Nuvenia.
Marjo Kuisma, Regional Sales Consumer Flexibles, Mondi, says: “The challenge was to find the best combination of renewable and recycled content that maintains product quality and the production efficiency already enjoyed by Essity. We tested several options until we found the most suitable solution. Working in collaboration with Essity and Dow validates our EcoSolutions approach; we go back to the start and ask the right questions to ensure we create the best possible solution for our customers.”
Guosheng Zhang, Global Technical Innovation Manager Feminine Care says: “We are excited to launch the new feminine care packaging that has a reduced carbon footprint and will contribute to our sustainable innovations. The solution demonstrates our and Mondi’s commitment to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: to work towards full recyclability and to increase the use of recycled plastic in our packaging. The end result is eye-catching, well designed and makes a positive impact on the environment.”

With the versatile Pure-Line portfolio, based on either PP or PE, SÜDPACK and SN Maschinenbau are coming together at Fachpack 2022 in Nuremberg to present a solution that is both innovative and sustainable for the packaging of a broad variety of products in bags. The fully recyclable packaging concept by SÜDPACK will be on display on the new rotary form, fill and seal machine FME 20 in hall 1 at stand 421 of SN German Pouch-Pack Technology.
SÜDPACK has further expanded its tried and tested Pure-Line product family, which reflects the spirit of the times – and especially that of the visitors to the trade fair. At Fachpack this year as well, the focus is on automated, cost-effective solutions that also go easy on resources and the environment while ensuring maximum product quality.
In addition to recyclable mono-materials based on polypropylene, the SÜDPACK portfolio also includes solutions made of polyethylene. Both film structures offer the properties that are necessary for efficient and safe packaging, particularly of food products in doypacks. The spectrum of applications ranges from grated cheese to air-dried sausages and jerky, to nuts, dried fruit and snacks and right through to coffee, tea, herbs and spices. Depending on the products to be packaged, the high-performance films can be equipped with different barrier properties. Based on what is needed, the doypacks can be aroma proof and provide optimal protection against moisture, UV radiation or oxygen.
An additional advantage is the excellent machinability of the materials due to their broad sealing range, which results in a high level of process and packaging reliability. At the same time, the formation of the sealing layer ensures the simple and efficient in-line application of common resealing systems – such as zippers – which are already available on the market for flat bags and doypacks.
Last but not least, the Pure-Line can also be printed using SÜDPACK’s newly developed and pioneering SPQ printing technology, which is setting standards in flexo printing with its low carbon footprint and was honored with the
German Packaging Award in gold in 2021.
Flexible and user-friendly HFFS bag packaging machine
SÜDPACK’s innovative and particularly sustainable film concept will be presented in Nuremberg on the SN bag packaging machine FME 20. The latest innovation by SN German Pouch-Pack Technology is an affordable, flexible and compact bag packaging machine for forming, filling and sealing three- and four-side sealed bags and doypacks. The bags can be filled with products of various consistencies using the appropriate dosing devices and sealed. Without any difficulties or loss in speed or quality, modern recyclable materials such as PurePP or PurePE can be processed with an output quantity of up to 180 bags per minute.
The FME 20 impresses with its reliable SN technology and provides quick and easy access to the world of flexible bag packaging. It is designed to be a simple and efficient bag packaging machine and is very easy to operate. The central gripper adjustment on the rotary table and the optimized height adjustment of the folding wedge contribute to a reduction of format changeover times, which greatly simplifies the operation of the machine.
A solution “on the cutting edge”
Both partners are expecting a great deal of interest among visitors at Fachpack from all industrial fields because the trend towards particularly resource-
conserving, recyclable materials will continue. SÜDPACK is currently faced with increased demand, especially from brand manufacturers: “As a market and technology leader in our industry, we aligned our product and performance portfolio early on to meet the new requirements in the market – and have already demonstrated our expertise in the field of sustainable packaging solutions with much noted pilot and development projects. We are now in a position to offer our customers solutions that are pioneering in terms of material efficiency, recyclability, renewable raw materials and circular economy,” explained Holger Hoss, who as Product Manager is responsible for the flow pack solutions at SÜDPACK.
“We will be presenting our new FME 20 bag packaging machine at Fachpack. With this machine model, we have expanded our product portfolio of simple and standardized bag packaging machines to include a duplex version. With an output of up to 180 bags per minute, the FME 20 is ideally suited for mid-range output requirements. It can easily process mono-materials, such as PurePP and PurePE from SÜDPACK, into high-quality bags and efficiently fill them with food products, such as bulky goods, powder and granules, but also non-food products and lotions,” added Felix Eberhardi, Marketing Manager at SN Maschinenbau.

Tube of the year 2022: etma presents the winners of the competition
etma Award focuses on innovative solutions in design, material and sustainability
During this year's annual meeting of the European Tube Manufacturers Association - etma - in Prague, a jury of representatives from etma member companies met to determine the winners in the categories of aluminum tubes, plastic tubes, laminate tubes, prototypes and in the sustainability category. With its annual Tube of the Year competition, etma demonstrates each year anew the creativity, innovative strength and performance of the European tube industry. Beyond the borders of Europe, the award sets global standards for forward-looking and sustainable packaging solutions of the highest quality.
The Jury voted for the Chanel N°5 tubes which are produced by Tubex Aluminium Tubes as winner in the aluminum tubes category. To mark 100 years of Chanel N°5, the legendary brand launched a limited edition of beauty products in very special packaging. The Chanel Factory 5 Collection presented its gels and lotions in functional containers like oil cans and paint pots, each printed with the iconic black-and-white design. This elegant fusion of luxury and utility showed how a single perfume can turn everyday materials into something much more glamorous. The winning tubes of TUBEX Aluminium Tubes are part of this timeless collection. The tubes were chosen by Chanel as packaging for La Crème Corps (150 ml and 20 ml) and Le Gel Douche (20 ml). All three tubes featured a matt finish across the tube body and shoulder, and a white octagonal cap. They were styled to resemble the tubes of paint you would normally find in a typical art supplies store, with the smaller tubes presented as a set in a chic monochrome box.
There were two winners in the plastic tube category this year. Firstly, the Caudalie shower gel tube, manufactured by Albéa, landed in first place. Caudalie has opted for a new packaging solution for its iconic shower gel line which combines a beautiful color shading obtained with mass color and flexo printing and a matching color cap. The tubes are using Albéa's Thin Wall technology with COEX PCR Max combined with Slight Cap PP, for a lightweight tube and a high PCR content. The appearance of this fantastic tube range is truly convincing. A matte surface provides an interesting feel, and the fascinating transparency of the material literally makes the colors of the range appear in a very special light. This creates an unmistakable appearance at the point of sale with a strong presence.
The other winner in the plastic tubes category is produced by Swiss manufacturer Hoffmann Neopac. For a vegan toothpaste from Liebherr, Neopac specially created the PICEA™ tube with spruce wood content. This "wooden tube" is a high-quality packaging solution that underscores the naturalness and sustainability of the product. The difference is actually noticeable, because the fine wood flour makes the surface of the tube feel slightly rough.
The tube has a significantly improved eco-balance thanks to the material used, as the PICEA™ wood tube is made of over 95% renewable resources - the spruce wood content is 10%, and the sugar-based content is 85%. The processed spruce wood originates from certified forests in the EU. The wood fibers come from sawdust waste from German joineries. The PICEA™ Wood Tube scores with a more than 40% better CO2 balance compared to a conventional PE tube. At the same time, it offers the same qualitative properties in terms of barrier function, decoration, food suitability or recyclability.
In the laminate tubes category, a tube produced by Albéa for Lipikar cream AP+M from La Roche-Posay took first place. La Roche-Posay's objective is to significantly improve its ecological footprint by continuously reducing the use of plastic in packaging. The new Lipikar Baume AP+M is now available in an eco-designed tube. This new generation of packaging is using Albéa’s EcoFusionTop, the two-in-one break-through innovation allowing 80% weight reduction (compared to standard head and cap) combined with Metamorphosis, a paper-based solution leading to 60% less plastic than the old Lipikar Packaging. EcoFusion Top is made from HDPE to guarantee mono-materiality and recyclability. It is also adapted to the e-commerce market and complies with Ista-6 standard. Visually, too, the winning tube is a real eye-catcher: the revolutionary closure solution reveals the principle of material savings at first glance, and the paper-based material creates an unmistakable sustainable look with character.
With its award-winning and patented MMB tube technology, Hoffmann Neopac convinced the jury in the prototypes category and carried off the victory. The Polyfoil® MMB Monomaterial Barrier Tube features a novel combination of high product protection, a minimal amount of non-PP materials, user-friendliness and appealing aesthetics, and represents a significant advance in environmentally conscious material technology. The PP-based Polyfoil MMB tube with PP closure or applicator can be recycled in the PP container recycling stream according to RecyClass certification and is also well suited for oxygen-sensitive goods. Compared to the conventional standard Polyfoil® range, Hoffmann Neopac uses less plastic in the tube body, reducing the CO2 emissions of a 30 mm diameter tube by up to 40%. The tubes are, for example, available with a high-quality soft-touch coating or with a shiny metallization.
The etma Secretary General, Gregor Spengler, is more than satisfied with the results of the etma awards: "Even in challenging times, our member companies are unwavering in their search for even better solutions in design, product protection and the development of new materials and resource-saving packaging solutions. It is fascinating to see how, year after year, the tube delivers new and interesting solutions for a wide range of applications and filling goods and continues to distinguish itself as an all-round packaging material."
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, in partnership with Fiorini International, a world leading converter and packaging producer based in Italy, has successfully created and launched a new fully recyclable paper packaging for a premium Italian pasta brand.
Following a complete overhaul of its packaging design, Antico Pastificio Umbro decided to combine the expertise of Mondi and Fiorini International to design and produce a paper bag with a viewing window for its premium pasta ranges. After the complete roll out, this new packaging solution will support the company’s sustainability goal of reducing plastic by saving up to 20 tonnes of plastic per year.
The successful partnership between Mondi and Fiorini International has resulted in an innovative paper bag design with a large window made of transparent, recyclable and biodegradable cellulose that allows the end user to see the contents. Thanks to the paper selected by Mondi and Fiorini International, the bag is fully recyclable while offering the same protective properties as the previous plastic packaging. The pasta has the same shelf life and is kept safe during transport. A new closure system sealed with a special food contact hot-melt glue, together with a reinforced patch on the bottom, improves hygiene and ensures easy opening. Made from renewable resources, the packaging can be easily disposed of by consumers in existing paper waste streams. The high paper recycling rates in Europe of over 80% mean that paper that has reached the end of its life can contribute to a circular economy. The new pasta bag offers superior printability so that all brand and product messages can be communicated effectively and it has great runnability on filling machines.
The groundbreaking packaging was included in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Upstream Innovation Guide to Packaging Solutions, published in November 2021. It was also part of The Waste Age Exhibition, hosted by the London Design Museum and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which was open to the public between October 2021 and February 2022. Here it was recognised as an innovative example of substitution for better recyclability, an approach that is in line with the Foundation’s vision for a circular economy for plastics.
Massimiliano Scottà, Head of Sales Region South & America Kraft Paper, Mondi says: “We used our customer-centric EcoSolutions approach to develop this recyclable packaging and worked very closely with Fiorini International and Antico Pastificio Umbro. This is a great example of best practice in creating packaging that keeps materials in circulation and contributes to Mondi’s MAP2030 sustainability target to make 100% of its products reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. In addition, we are delighted to have been part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and London Design Museum's Upstream Innovation installation, which is about rethinking packaging and developing solutions that are sustainable by design: This means focusing on the purpose while optimising the material and even changing it completely if necessary, as with this new paper bag for pasta.”
Pietro Fiorini, Sales Director Packaging Division at Fiorini International, explains: “Ethical and environmental responsibility are the values that lead the daily activities in Fiorini International. These same values, together with research on market trends, innovative technologies and a qualified manufacturing system, have been the key elements we used in this exciting project of transformation. We designed, together with Mondi, the best performing paper solution for the pasta bag. We are proud to be part of a sustainable mission and we know that this requires a systematic and cooperative approach among stakeholders in the supply chains, from producer to consumer. This includes involving consumers in initiatives to raise awareness of sustainable consumption and lifestyles, providing them with appropriate information about packaging. The partnership with Pastificio Umbro is a successful pilot project where Fiorini International’s experience, research, innovation and technology have defined a sustainable production model perfectly integrated within a brand strategy and a common mission.”
Leonardo Faccendini, CEO Antico Pastificio Umbro, concludes: “Reducing the environmental impact of our products – their manufacture, packaging and transport – is a top priority for us as a company, and replacing traditional plastic packaging with paper is a major step towards achieving this goal. We are investing in new systems and a plant and are plan to roll out this plastic-free packaging across our entire pasta range.”

REfill, REuse, REpeat, made entirely from recycled PP, combines elevated aesthetics with sustainability.
Toronto, Canada – FASTEN, an IBG (Innovative Beauty Group) company and a leading global beauty solutions provider, has introduced its REfill REuse REpeat, a sustainable, refillable cosmetic jar system ideal for cream skincare and makeup products. Available in a standard 50 ml cream jar size, the system combines high-end appeal with heightened eco-friendliness.
FASTEN’s REfill REuse REpeat jar is made entirely of one material, recycled polypropylene (PP). All parts are fully recyclable, which ensures a circular economy aiming to repurpose waste as a resource for manufacturing new products and materials. The concept comprises a lightweight, open outer jar base in conjunction with an ultra-light, thermoformed refill cup. The refill is inserted inside the base with one click, and removed just as easily. To distinguish between creams, differing colors can be used for the refill cup.
Importantly, the open structure of the jar base not only shows consumers which cream refill they are using visually, but also reduces the material needed for the jar. This reusable jar design can save up to 80 percent on material usage compared to conventional 50 ml jars.
FASTEN designed its REfill REuse REpeat jar to be 70 percent lighter than comparable standard cream jars, and the refill units were made stackable. The result is a drastic increase in space consolidation and substantial reduction in shipping weight. Combined, these factors lead to a significantly reduced supply chain CO2 footprint.
The concept is made even more sustainable by replacing ink with debossing, eliminating the use of glue and utilizing fast-growing elephant grass in the cardboard box that houses the jar.
IBG, a division of Albea Group, is comprised of Orchard Custom Beauty and FASTEN and serves several dynamic mass and prestige beauty brands. The company applies its industry expertise to support its customers with innovative and responsible custom and turnkey solutions that include design, sourcing, formula development, bespoke packaging and accessories for color cosmetics, skin care, personal care, home care, hair care, and gifts with purchase.
“At FASTEN we pride ourselves on consistently bringing forward-thinking innovations to our customers with an unwavering focus on reducing environmental impact,” said Ilja Zutt, Managing Director of FASTEN. “Our REfill REuse REpeat jar is just that – a unique packaging concept created to satisfy all aspects of sustainability from its reduced material usage, refillable design and full recyclability.”

From processes, products, and technologies to the circular economy – SÜDPACK continues to set new standards with sustainable film and packaging concepts as well as responsible practices. Only recently, the company group joined the SBT initiative – and was also ranked 36th among the most sustainable medium-sized enterprises by WirtschaftsWoche. The film manufacturer’s forthcoming appearance at this year’s FachPack trade show is therefore all about sustainability. Chief among the eye-catching highlights at Stand 224 in Hall 7 will be a large “theme island” illustrating the Group’s sustainability roadmap. Key focus areas: recyclable packaging concepts for a wide range of industries, solutions for the circular economy, downgauging and material reduction, and high-performance films made from renewable resources.
A trade show appearance with the wow-factor: In Nuremberg, SÜDPACK will demonstrate that sustainability – when planned holistically and implemented honestly – delivers immense benefits for people, the environment, and also the economy. In addition to optimizing its own carbon footprint in line with the goal of NET ZERO, a major focus of the film manufacturer’s sustainability strategy is the development of high-performance structures that optimally meet current requirements in terms of recyclability and material efficiency. The best example of this is SÜDPACK’s innovative Pure-Line product family, which in addition to recyclable mono-materials based on PP, now also includes solutions made of PE for diverse packaging concepts.
Sustainable high-performance films for a wide range of applications
SÜDPACK expects its practical tubular bags to provide a powerful draw for the trade fair’s visitors. “We aligned our product range to meet the changing requirements in the market at an early stage. As a result, we can now offer an attractive selection of highly efficient and recyclable solutions for a wide variety of food products. Currently, start-ups in the “new food” segment are especially interested in our flow packs. And for meat products like minced meat or alternative sources of protein, this concept is nothing short of a packaging revolution,” confirms Valeska Haux, Vice President Strategic Marketing at SÜDPACK. Despite their low material thickness, these structured materials based on Pure-Line films, which can be efficiently processed on horizontal and vertical flow pack lines, offer a degree of stability and product protection that is comparable to conventional packaging systems. Unlike tray packaging, material savings of up to 60 percent are possible, which also has a positive impact on CO2 emissions along the entire logistics chain.
In addition, SÜDPACK will put the spotlight on the new Doypacks in its Pure-Line range. Like the flow packs, these products can be equipped with barriers and functional properties to meet the respective requirements. As a stand-out feature, the barrier composite material, which was previously based on aluminium, has been replaced by a recyclable mono-plastic solution made of polypropylene. This means that customers in this segment can now also benefit from an appealing and above all sustainable packaging concept – for example, for cured sausages and similar products – which meets the legislative requirements for recyclable packaging.
Turning to the production of sustainable thermoformed packaging, SÜDPACK will present two compelling film concepts in Nuremberg: Multifol PurePP and Multipeel PurePP, both of which are also characterized by a highly efficient use of materials as well as certified recyclability. For example, the packaging weight of a flexible packaging concept consisting of a Multifol PurePP flexible film as the bottom web and a peelable PP-based top web is only about 55 percent compared to conventional tray packaging.
If, on the other hand, the fair’s trade visitors are interested in film solutions made from renewable resources, they need venture no further than Hall 7, where SÜDPACK will present two attractive solutions at its stand – Ecocraft Skin and Ecocraft Shape.
“We are closing loops”
SÜDPACK closed its internal material loops years ago thanks to in-house compounding and regranulation processes. Plastic waste from film production is thus collected, sorted, and processed into high-quality compounds in modern plants for subsequent use in the manufacture of new products.
A variety of products consisting of 30 percent recycled content (based on mechanical recycling) are already available to customers. These solutions can be equipped with either a high or medium barrier as required – and are available as both conventional and recyclable solutions.
At the same time, the Group is strongly committed to the further development and implementation of chemical recycling as an alternative, complementary recycling process in the market. SÜDPACK’s extensive investment in the promising CARBOLIQ process is aimed at creating a closed-loop, high-performance, industry-standard system for flexible and previously non-recyclable products. Besides the diverse range of input materials, CARBOLIQ offers competitive advantages in terms of energy efficiency and low emissions. The recovered oil is virgin-grade quality and can be used by the plastics industry in the same way as fossil fuels to produce a wide spectrum of plastic granulates. These granulates can in turn be processed to produce high-performance films for sophisticated packaging applications which are required above all in the food industry.
An important building block in this context is the ISCC PLUS certification (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification). SÜDPACK was one of the first film manufacturers to successfully achieve this for all its German sites as early as the end of 2021. Among other things, the company uses this certification to demonstrate the use of recycled materials – and has thus laid an important foundation for the ongoing development of processes and products that will continue to drive the transformation from a linear to a circular economy.
SPQ also reduces the carbon footprint during package printing
In addition, SÜDPACK will provide full details of its innovative and pioneering SPQ printing technology. Already honoured with the German Packaging Award in gold, this printing process reduces the use of ink and solvents to a minimum and sets new standards in flexo printing due to its small carbon footprint. At the SÜDPACK stand, visiting professionals will be able to verify the advantages of this novel technology, including its brilliant print quality, using a CO2 calculator and a sample book.
Life cycle assessment – a new service from SÜDPACK
To give its customers extra peace of mind when choosing sustainable packaging, the film manufacturer now also offers a life cycle assessment for suitable packaging concepts, if required. “Despite the fact that only one to three percent of harmful greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are linked to food packaging – every gram of packaging material that can be saved from the outset reduces the environmental impact of the packaging,” Says Valeska Haux.

Wolfertschwenden, 25 July 2022 - Exhibiting over a total area of around 300 mm2 in Nuremberg, MULTIVAC will be showing a representative cross section of its comprehensive range of products and services, as well as evidence of its accumulated expertise in complete lines. The central topics are: Efficient and sustainable packaging of food, medical and pharmaceutical products, as well as expert advice on all aspects of packaging, together with the company's labelling, marking and inspection solutions, and finally automation and digitalisation. Two new machine developments - a flowpacker and the innovative R3 thermoforming packaging machine - send a strong signal to the market.
As one of the most important European trade exhibitions, FachPack is seen as a pointer and helping hand in the transformation process of the packaging industry. The focus this year therefore is on the aspects of sustainability, the closed-loop economy, and efficiency gains through automation.
By placing the focus on these aspects at the exhibition, MULTIVAC is serving the current requirements of the market very directly. The highlights in the food sector include various line concepts, as well as a full wrap labeller with weigh price marking. The focus in the healthcare sector is on a carrier system, which is very gentle on the product and provides not only controlled infeed of the syringes, but also loading into the pack cavities.
Centrifuge line with the new W 500 flowpacker for vegan burgers
Among the exhibits for the meat industry and manufacturers of alternative proteins, there will be a space-saving line for the automatic arranging, infeeding, packaging and labelling of vegan burgers on a cardboard tray in a practical and very material-efficient flowpack. While a centrifuge arranges the burgers into a single line on one transport conveyor, the cardboard trays are denested onto another conveyor running in parallel. As the next process stage, a handling module loads the burgers into the cardboard trays, which are then packed on the packaging machine under modified atmosphere. An inline labeller then applies a label from above to the packs.
The universal W 500 flowpacker, which was shown for the first time at Anuga FoodTec 2022, and which features the proven MULTIVAC Hygienic Design™, is the heart of the line. Designed for a wide range of products and rapid product change, this packaging solution is characterised in particular by its attractive price-to-performance ratio. The robust W 500 at Nuremberg will be integrated into an automated line, but it can also be used as a stand-alone solution. Its main features are maximum performance, precision, reliability and user-friendliness. Offering an output of up to 120 packs per minute or a film speed of up to 30 metres/min, this new development in the MULTIVAC product range is currently among the best performing box-motion flowpacking solutions on the market.
Tray packaging line with paper pulp trays for fresh produce
Are you looking for attractive, sustainable and state-of-the-art packaging of fresh products? MULTIVAC will show you how to do this on its compact and automatic TX 710 traysealer. A tray filled with fresh berries is placed on a transport conveyor, before being sealed in the traysealer and then labelled from above. The tray made of cellulose is a biologically degradable tray, which meets all the current requirements in terms of sustainability, and which can also be run without problems on standard machines.
Thanks to its robust construction and innovative machine control featuring Flow Manager and Multi Sensor Control, the traysealer is capable of packing with maximum flexibility and consistent reliability - even at very high output in non-stop mode. A further guarantee of outstanding performance are the RFID-coded X-tools, which are the groundbreaking die concept of the MULTIVAC X-line.
A particular plus in terms of process reliability, pack quality, and above all user-friendliness: The line is completely networked, so that it can be used with the digital MULTIVAC Smart Services, as well as being conveniently controlled from one point via MULTIVAC Line Control.
Thermoforming packaging line with portioning machine for automatically processing fresh meat and packaging in retail packs
The starting point for this line is a new and compact portioning machine from TVI, which was specially developed for the entry-level sector. The multifunctional GMS 400 portioning machine stands for the best portioning quality and optimum product yield - and at FachPack it will be processing fresh meat into very even steaks.
The meat portions arrive at the new R3 thermoforming packaging machine via a transport conveyor. This highly flexible model achieves a speed of twelve cycles per minute at its peak level, and can therefore reach the output of high-end slicer lines. The R3 can run not only conventional films, but also the latest types of sustainable packaging materials, such as for example the currently favoured polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene-based mono structures, which it can run consistently and, above all else, without producing creases. In order to achieve this, the forming station of the machine has been equipped with a special type of allover heating, which heats recyclable films very evenly. In addition to this, the chain guides for the web advance can be adjusted individually, and they are also decoupled from all the forces of the machine processes. The result is that MULTIVAC achieves a constant web tension without any waves at the edge of the pack, and this ultimately gives the pack the ideal appearance.
Carrier system for the controlled transportation, loading and buffering of syringes
MULTIVAC will be showing the visitors from the medical and pharmaceutical industries a modular carrier system, which includes an integrated H 242 handling module, and which enables pre-filled glass or plastic syringes to be transported in a controlled and gentle way to the packaging machine.
The syringes are assembled in an upstream process, and then orientated and placed separately in an object carrier. When they reach the packaging machine, a robot picks up the products from the carriers, and then places these in the pack cavities either individually or in groups. Thanks to the additional integrated buffer function, any stops in the overall process, such as a breakdown in an upstream or downstream process, can be easily bridged and the processes decoupled, allowing a continuous product flow to be maintained. This is of great importance, particularly with automated solutions, since such stops often cause a significant loss of overall effectiveness throughout the line.
A high-performance vision system from MULTIVAC Marking & Inspection, which is integrated into this line, ensures that the packs are checked consistently for completeness. Even when operating at high throughput, the vision system checks, whether the individual products have been loaded correctly into the pack cavities. If this is not the case, the corresponding pack is ejected automatically.
Full wrap labelling of a wide range of packs with the L 312
MULTIVAC also expects a high level of interest from visitors in its new L 312 conveyor belt labeller. This unit enables C labelling and D labelling at up to 120 packs per minute to be performed automatically with weigh price marking in one process on the same machine. The robust labelling system, which is built to the MULTIVAC Hygienic Design, features a very precise level of calibrated weight measurement, and it can be used as a stand-alone solution or in automated lines.
The weighing unit determines the weight of the pack very precisely and transfers the calculated product price to the labeller. An integrated thermal transfer printer is then used to print all the specifically defined information onto the label, such as for example weight, price, best-before date and even barcode. The label is then dispensed onto the top of the pack, before being wrapped accurately around the pack like a banderole.
This solution meets the increasing demands of the market in terms of not only efficiency and performance but also sustainability. Full wrap labelling scores heavily, when compared with cardboard sleeves, thanks to its high level of material efficiency. Depending on the label material used, savings of up to 70 percent can be achieved on material costs.
Other highlights at the trade fair
... will be a presentation of the company's digital products, as well as its services in the areas of packaging consultancy and after-sales care.
