The amount recycled represents 57,1 of the packages discarded by the consumer. The 8th recycling census also registered an increase of 4.25, if it is compared to the 282,000 tons recycled in 2010. This index is more than double the growth registered in production of new packaging, which grew 2 in 2011, even with the global crisis. With revenues of 1.2 billion, recycling accounts for more than a third of all revenues of the pet industry in brazil. The president of abipet, auri marçon, said to the local press the performance shows the work of industry in order to generate demand for recycled pet contributes greatly to the development of recycling, despite the difficulties related to selective collection.
The textile market remains the main destination of all recycled pet in brazil. The sector responds by using about 40 of the material, followed by packaging and chemical applications 18 each.
