RPC Promens Montpont has enhanced its containers for the Agrochemicals market to offer one of the most comprehensive ranges that is able to satisfy the varying needs of this diverse sector.

As well as a choice of sizes – 100ml, 250ml, 500ml, 1litre and 5 litres – the containers can now be specified in mono HDPE as well as co-extruded PE/PA and PE/EVOH (except 100ml), providing a number of different options to meet the individual characteristics and protection requirements of different chemical formulae.

Bottles from 100ml to 1 litre are available with a KS50 neck, which is suitable for induction heat sealing along with a PET/ALU seal. The 5 litre jerrycan can be specified with a standard KS63 neck or a “Slit” 63 neck, which is compatible with closed transfer systems.

The containers combine plastics light weight and easy handling with excellent robustness and durability. The 500ml, 1 litre and 5 litre sizes are UN-approved in line with the rigorous requirements of the crop protection sector.

A variety of engraving options is available to create individual branding and on-shelf differentiation, and logos and UN accreditations can be incorporated into the finished containers. User-friendly options include measuring scale engravings and a visi-stripe for the easy monitoring of contents.

New modular jar labeller purchased and installed at the Spanish facility of well-known preserve producer Hero Group, a player on the European market since 1886. Their purchase decision was based on the outstanding performance and versatility of the Sacmi “plug&play” solution.

The Spanish branch of the Hero Group, which has over a century's experience in the manufacture and marketing of preserves, not to mention facilities in Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, Egypt and Spain, recently ordered and completed installation of a new Sacmi labeller to label its vast product range.

Hero España has gone for modular Sacmi technology. The reasons behind their purchase decision? The versatility of Sacmi plug&play technology and the ability to operate across multiple labelling technologies and systems with a single machine. The goal of installing the new labeller? To maximise production line performance and achieve total quality on labelled products thanks to incorporation of a special vision system that automatically positions the jar before label application.

More specifically, the electronic glass container positioning system ensures correct in- machine orientation while the self-adhesive labelling stations perform non-stop application of front, rear and wrap-around labels and, lastly, the special quality seal between label and lid. Two further cold glue labelling modules allow application of pre- cut labels on the front and back of the container.

Capable of output rates in the order of 24,000 applications an hour, the machine is equipped with an LVS (labelling vision system) unit which performs automatic container orientation and subsequent label checks. On one side, Sacmi plug&play technology makes size changeover tasks easier and, on the other, facilitates maintenance by allowing easy access to essential parts and work to be carried out on individual modules without interrupting production.

For Sacmi, which operates on the strategic Spanish market though Sacmi Iberica (Castellón de la Plana), this latest order once confirms the soundness of a technology that maximizes quality, versatility of use, reliability and performance.

The country's main plastic-rubber industry event will see the Group attend with the successful compression press range, now enhanced with new cap-preform integrated design services. Alongside these solutions, Sacmi will also showcase CHS inspection systems for total cap quality control and the advanced Sacmi line supervisor, which manages orders and monitors all plant performance parameters, even remotely.

With no less than 300 m 2 of display space, Sacmi will be out in force at the 32 nd edition of Chinaplas, the international plastics-rubber fair being held from 24 to 27 April 2018 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Hongqiao (Shanghai). Plastic layer pads (PLPs) are replacing cardboard intermediate layers for the transportation of glass, can and PET containers

Cartonplast “Best Practice” examples worth emulating

These two examples of practical applications should serve to stimulate other companies seeking efficient solutions for similar transportation and production problems. The examples show: PLPs are a worthy replacement for cardboard intermediate layers. All the operating processes thus changed sustainably increase efficiency, lower the costs and yet retain high quality standards.

1. The CPL model for success

The “Move to plastic” project at Halewood International, the largest independent manufacturer of beverages in Great Britain, was a collaborative initiative with the glass suppliers. The aim in this particular case was to reduce waste at the location, and in return to increase the number of recyclable items. 80% of the container glass products are now transported on PLPs – cardboard intermediate layers are now only used in certain individual cases. The PLPs for the transportation of the glass products to the beverage manufacturer are provided, fetched and then reprocessed by CPL-UK. In this way, Halewood can focus on the manufacture and delivery of its high-quality beverage products. Major changes have also resulted in the operating processes. Due to the reduced use of cardboard intermediate layers, savings have been achieved regarding both time and personnel, who were usually deployed for sorting of the cardboard waste material. The sorting and recycling of damaged PLPs is now organised through CPL-UK, and Halewood does not incur any disposal costs.

Julian Galsworthy, Vendor Scheduling Manager at Halewood International, based in the United Kingdom, confirms the efficiency of the system: “Our production processes have been optimised, as the depalletisation of the glass containers has become easier and faster. In particular, wet and damaged cardboard intermediate layers were causing problems during the depalletisation of the glass containers, and we were suffering production losses. PLPs do not suffer deformations – in contrast to cardboard – and the depalletisation of the glass containers now runs smoothly”.

2. The CPL model for success

JACOBS DOUWE EGBERTS (JDE), one of the largest instant coffee manufacturers in Great Britain, was having problems with the weight of the glasses on their cardboard intermediate layers – and also the depalletisation process wasn’t running smoothly. The glass containers are too heavy to be palletised stably on cardboard intermediate layers. This was a major quality and safety issue. The costs of more sturdy cardboard intermediate layers of the same thickness as PLPs would have been uneconomical – and their vulnerability to damp was also a problem. The company therefore replaced the cardboard intermediate layers with PLPs for the transportation of the glass containers. The surface quality of the PLPs now permits a rapid and reliable depalletisation process and reduced production failure times. Due to the improved strength and durability of the PLPs, the palletisation options for the glass containers have also expanded – more weight can now be packed onto each pallet. In this way, the number of pallets required for transportation has been reduced, and therefore also the transport volume. JDE no longer has to invest in new transport products, as the stability of the PLPs guarantees their reutilisation – in contrast to cardboard.

As James Dockree, Packaging Quality Specialist at JDE in the United Kingdom, explains: “Cardboard intermediate layers do not work efficiently on our palletisers in comparison to the PLPs. Every time glass falls off the pallets, we have a major quality and safety issue”.

“Green” transport products reduce CO2 emissions

Transport layer pads made from polypropylene in an environmental comparison

In order to answer the market’s questions regarding the environmental compatibility of a transport layer pad made of polypropylene in comparison to a cardboard intermediate layer, CPL has published a comparative product ecological assessment on PP layer pads and cardboard intermediate layers in June 2015. In this study, the “durability” of the PP layer pads was identified as the most important cause variable for the reduction of influences on the environment. The CO2 emissions over the entire lifecycle of a PP layer pad are 67% lower than for the corrugated cardboard intermediate layer also examined as an alternative means of transport. CO2 has advanced to become a central factor for purchase decisions, as many companies are currently attempting to reduce their CO2 emissions

Outsourcing sustainably lowers costs

Due to the CPL Pool System, customers profit from the economic advantages of the PLP rental concept. No company stocks of transport and packaging materials have to be maintained, and storage areas are cleared. All pallets with PLPs circulate in the external CPL Pool System. The cost structures remain transparent and the overall costs are reduced, as only service and rental fees are incurred for the number of PLPs actually used – without subsequent costs. In addition, there are no disposal costs for the recycling of damaged PLPs. The economic viability of the CPL PLPs are also explainable through their long lifecycle. Summary: service and rental fees save costs – there are no replacement and financing costs – unproductively-bound capital is released for investments into the core business of the CPL customers.

Sustainability through recycling

Transport layer pads made from recycled polypropylene

Layer pads (LPs) for the CPL reusable transport system are produced from the recycling plastic “polypropylene” (PP). This material is characterised by its robust quality and durability – one individual PP LP is theoretically infinitely reusable as long as it is not damage or lost. The PP LPs are therefore sustainable in the truest sense of the word. The use of PP LP “waste” for the production of new PP LPs reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and PP LPs made from PP recycled material are of the same high quality as those made from new PP material. Only the PP LPs sorted by CPL (e.g. broken LPs) are used to make the regranulate – which also guarantees the tracking of the materials.

Summary

The reutilisation of means of transport is more economic and ecological than simply throwing items away. This is one advantage of the CPL PLPs for transportation in the container industry, and at the same time a decisive competition factor in the market. “Our reusable transport products provide real added value for our customers and support them in addressing the changing conditions in the market and in the environment. This doesn’t just save costs and is good for the ecosystem – it has long-term benefits for both parties. The terms economic viability and sustainability have long ceased to contradict each other. February 2018. Tokyo-based Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) and SIG have signed a joint venture agreement which will bring new value added carton packaging and filling technology solutions to the Japanese food and beverage industry. The 50-50 joint venture will be established as of April 1, 2018, under the name of DNP • SIG Combibloc Co., Ltd., located in Tokyo.

A new age for MAP packaging technology

GEA PowerPak is a highly configurable and capable packaging machine for production lines with a high throughput or frequently changing products. Now available with OxyCheck, a unique in-line system for monitoring the quality of remaining oxygen content and the integrity of MAP packaging (Modified Atmosphere Package). The system uses a unique sensor spot printed on the inner side of the top film. The thermoformer-mounted optical sensors project light on the sensor spot and measure the wavelength of the light that fluoresces from the dye. GEA invented a methodology of translating the dye’s fluorescence to O2 content depending on the temperature. The innovation is in the technology accurately measuring the O2 content and seal integrity of every single MAP that exits the thermoformer, without destroying in by a needle as has been done in the past. Costly and wasteful sample testing, previously used on only one percent of the packaging, can be improved and food producers can now check 100 percent of the packs on each line. As a non-invasive quality control system, the film and seal remain intact and neither product nor film material are wasted. Now only checked packages enter the supply chain, GEA can prevent from potential costly recalls for whole batches.

Automation specialist appointed to OPC Foundation's Technical Advisory Council

B&R is now represented in the OPC Foundation's Technical Advisory Council (TAC). This move further strengthens B&R's role in the strategic advancement of the OPC UA standard. Appointment to the TAC is a tribute to B&R's committed involvement throughout numerous OPC Foundation working groups.

Drawing its membership from the likes of Microsoft, SAP, Rockwell and Siemens, TAC is the highest tech-nical body within the OPC Foundation. The council is tasked with setting the strategic course for advancing OPC UA in a way that maximizes user benefits. It has the authority to establish technical working groups and approve new OPC UA specifications.

Pub/Sub and TSN

B&R will be represented in the TAC by Dr. Dietmar Bruckner. As Technical Manager of Open Automation Technologies at B&R, Dr. Bruckner is responsible for all development activities surrounding OPC UA TSN. "I'm very much looking forward to working in the TAC," he says. "Together, we will make rapid progress in the development of Pub/Sub and TSN. In combination with application-specific OPC UA companion specifi-cations, we will very soon be able to offer a uniform standard for seamless communication from the sensor to the cloud."

POWERLINK has been adopted by the IEEE under international standard IEEE 61158. It is the only Industrial Ethernet protocol to achieve this status. The IEEE views its standards for TSN and POWERLINK as core components for real-time industrial communication.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world's largest professional association in its field. Among its most prominent accomplishments is the IEEE 802.3 standard commonly known as Ethernet.

The IEEE's industrial real-time communication working group has been working for the past two years on the definition of an Industrial Ethernet standard. In March 2017 POWERLINK was adopted as the sole IEEE standard with 97% of the vote.

Unrestricted openness

"With its combination of high performance and unrestricted openness, POWERLINK is the perfect complement to the other IEEE communication standards." The quality of the BA 25 from BEKUM is apparent: The BA 25 machine is designed for discontinuous accumulator operation as well as bottom calibration and uses parison spreaders with vertical adjustment. Modern controls and hydraulics allow the processor very accurate repeatable cycles for high efficiency production. The BA 25 system has also excellent plastification. BEKUM extruders use a special screw geometry for optimum homogenisation of the material. An energy-saving AC motor ensures that the material is melted gently at low rotational speeds. The patented spiral mandrel distributor head technology from BEKUM allows uniform wall thickness over 360° of the water bottle and offers reproducible product quality that is second to none. This in-house development by BEKUM practically excludes article thinning and flow marks, ensures a crystal-clear water bottle transparency with a cloud-free surface and, by doing so, enables products of high quality.

High efficiency at the forefront

The highly transparent PC containers are blown out in a special blow mould, which has multi-zone temperature control and magnetic quick-change inserts, with or without a handle. The BEKUM single-station blowers of the BA series achieve an undisputed output of over 160 containers / hour at a net weight of 750 g based on the reference article “Nestlé 5 Gallon Aqua Design without handle”. This high output rate is possible without compromising the high article stability as well as the crystal-clear transparency, even at demoulding temperatures of over 85°C.

Sophisticated polycarbonate

PC containers are country-specific and made out of pure new materials (e.g. from Bayer Makrolon, Mitsubishi Novarex and other PC materials), a varying material mix of new material and recycled material, as well as 100% recyclates. The classic disposable coffee capsule’s job is actually quite varied: the coffee aroma has to completely develop even though the capsules have a long shelf life. The capsule has to convey the feeling of lifestyle and luxury you get from enjoying a good cup of coffee. It should also ensure brand recognition and provide information about the contents. Once used, the packaging should be disposed of easily while demonstrating that it is environment-friendly, both during manufacture and when in use.

The brilliant print quality of the In-Mold labelling not only serves to effectively staging the product, but also has a concrete boost in sales: the customer can get an accurate picture of the content. Biocompatible Strength of PLA material

IML, when combined with environmentally friendly PLA material, a synthetic polymer, offers a new way to reposition disposable coffee capsules and to enhance the appearance of the product. PLA is obtained from renewable sources, such as corn starch. This makes PLA a biocompatible raw material. This approach is also a contribution to better achieve the sustainability goal of the providers. The sweetish smell is more reminiscent of the cornstarch contained in it than molten plastic. Low moisture absorption ensures easier storage and high UV resistance, as well as severe flammability are practical properties for a variety of applications. In general, PLA has mechanically good properties such as high surface hardness, rigidity, and high modulus of elasticity (tensile strength), but only moderate impact resistance.

American premiere at the NPE 2018 in Orlando

With this increasing demand in mind, Beck Automation set about developing an IML machine for high-quality plastic coffee capsules. The new machine shall premiere in the US when it is presented to the public at the NPE 2018. The SuperCube ® pail from RPC Superfos is at the centre of a growing success story after being chosen to pack 100% biodegradable vineyard clips that ensure the vertical growth of vines. Since Compagnie des Agrafes selected the SuperCube ® for its special clips, both product and pack have attracted rave reviews and the clips have enjoyed an upward curve in sales.

The French company chose the 5.5 litre SuperCube ® because it wanted a convenient and reusable plastic pail to replace the more usual plastic bags in cardboard boxes. The innovative starch clips, which are used to keep the vines attached to the wire trellising so that they grow upwards, save up to ten hours per hectare of later gathering by being fully biodegradable.

“It was clear to us that we wanted to sell our new clips in plastic pails, but we were not more specific than that,” explains Chloé Gautherot, Assistant Manager at Compagnie des Agrafes. “During our packaging market search, the RPC Superfos website caught our attention and we got in touch. It was a sound decision and we are perfectly pleased to cooperate with this dynamic and attentive packaging provider.

EconCore’s continuous process for producing high performance lightweight thermoplastic honeycomb cores for composites is set to be a crowd-puller at JEC World 2018 in Paris on March 6 to 8. Its ThermHex process meets the growing need for replacing complex, heavy and expensive parts in highly demanding applications across industries. On Stand R73 in Hall 6, EconCore will present results of new development and tests on honeycombs made in modified polycarbonates, polyamide 66 and polyphenylene sulfide. The work is being carried out in its newly refurbished R&D facilities in Leuven, Belgium.

EconCore is now entering the final phase of validating these engineering thermoplastics. This year, it is targeting new application developments in markets of automotive, aerospace, transportation, packaging and building & construction. “During 2018, EconCore will be moving forward with lots of enthusiasm and energy,” says Tomasz Czarnecki, COO of EconCore. “We intend to build on what was a very successful 2017.“

IC Split is a software that enables A4/Letter or A3/Tabloid printers to make transfers in formats up to DIN A2 or special widths and lengths. The solutions makes it possible to easily produce DIN A3 format and larger using a DIN A4/Letter printer or DIN A2/Tabloid “extra plus” format and larger using a DIN A3/Tabloid printer with just a few mouse clicks.

The self-explanatory software simply divides – depending on the format required – the print image into two, three or more parts which are later reassembled on the carrier fabric to form the large design.

With just a few mouse clicks IC Split generates a dividing line in the motif that automatically and abstractly places itself in the edges of the area to be divided. The resulting line shape is invisible after transferring the print to the the textile. The lines are not visible with the naked eye.

The IC-Split software recognizes individual colors in the image and automatically creates the cutting pattern for bright surfaces in white and light, for dark surfaces in black and dark areas. The result is an interleaved cutting path, which will be invisible on the textile. The printed image appears as a whole.

IC Split is integrated into TransferRIP and also offered as a stand-alone software solution. IC Split will be available in February 2018 for Mac and Windows.

New Delhi, Feb 2nd, 2018– Cosmo Films, a global leader in films for packaging, lamination and labeling applications has announced commissioning of its second Cast Polypropylene (CPP) Line and fourth metalizer, both having annual capacity of 7500 MT. With installation of these new lines, the company’s annual CPP films capacity will go from 1800 MT to 9300 MT and the metalized films will increase from 15000 MT to 22,500 MT.

These new lines have been commissioned at company’s existing facility at Karjan, near Vadodara, India which already houses BOPP lines, extrusion coating & chemical coating lines and a metalizer. The 2.85 meter CPP line is five-layered and is designed to produce speciality films (especially barrier films) for various packaging applications. The line has the possibility to have multilayer combinations. The new 2.85 meter metalizer is equipped with advanced control monitoring system and closed loop auto deposition control system. The facility at Karjan has been developed keeping future expansions in mind.

Speaking on the development, Mr. Pankaj Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films Ltd said, “Apart from being a focussed BOPP player over the years, we have made significant efforts in recent times to become a complete film solution provider with more and more films to offer along with various value added services. Moreover there has been a dearth of organised CPP players in the market and with the expansion of our capacity; we shall be better suited to serve our customers. The new lines are also expected to help increase the overall margins and volumes to some extent.”
