Hello friends of Packaging
It has been a roller coaster ride for us in 2014 but we enjoyed the wonders of packaging through various adventurous routes. We strongly felt that there is a huge poverty in packaging knowledge sharing and so we continue to fill that gap with our limited resources. It can be easily summed up in the following lines:
”Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken
To give you the summary of some of the achievements, please note the following;
1. Suppliers Process Capability Assessment : It involved more than 3 continents, 10+ Countries for a top Pharmaceutical company in Europe for primary packaging material and was managed Offsite successfully.

Its interesting that Aravana Prasadam is being packed and given in Tin cans at the temple. Its the great step to distribute prasadam hygienically. This also helps to create revenue as its sold at Rs 60 per can.
Incidentally there is no fssai mark so may be its exempted from food safety standards even though its packed and sold.
But its great that packaging is so nicely used in temples and helps to grow the profession, create jobs too.

eCommerce in India is growing like anything but infrastructure still needs to develop to really sustain it. I think its growing since market needs it and bridges are built only when rivers are being crossed. Effective Packaging and right logistics are critical for the survival, growth and sustainability of E-commerce.
The Roles of Packaging in eCommerce:
eCommerce typically involves direct to consumer delivery and so packaging must perform number of critical jobs to maintain the expected value of the product. Some of the issues are:
· Inefficient packaging
· Frustration to open
· Frustration due to big boxes to fit into standard sizes and use of too many air pillows
So what is the solution? We really do not know but one solution could be On demand Packaging or customised packaging supplies on short notice for the small orders etc.
To fill this gap, we invite you to share your experience with us and also let us know if you are offering packaging solutions, materials, machines or anything to make eCommerce much more successful and we will then be happy to connect you with the right buyers.
The details can be emailed to info@packagingconnections.com

It is amazing to know that a Japanese burger chain faced an interesting sales problem. The Freshness Burger chain has a very large and very popular “Classic Burger”.It’s the most popular burger among male customers but dead last among female customers. So what’s up with that?
It turns out to be a cultural thing. “Ochobo” (small mouth) is considered an attractive trait for Japanese females. It’s also considered well-mannered to cover your mouth when you open it in public. So basically it’s considered culturally unattractive and poor etiquette for women to open their mouths wide enough to take a bite of this big burger.
You can read the full article Since it would be difficult for a burger chain to change a cultural norm ingrained over thousands of years, Freshness Burger came up with another solution instead. They created a wrapper for the burger with a picture of the lower part of a woman’s face on it. If you eat the burger in the wrapper it covers your open mouth with an attractive small closed mouth while you eat.
Once they implemented what they call the “liberation wrapper” sales of the Classic Burger jumped 213%!
So moral of the story is do you really understand your customer needs?

Yesterday afternoon I got a surprise in the office when I was suddenly served warm tea on my desk. You will be thinking so what was so great that I was surprised? Simple reason, it was a traditional tea that we find on roadside corner tea stalls that we all love in hard day's work but we hardly get such ready tea in our sophisticated offices. The reason is simple, if we order from a roadside corner then hygiene is an issue. So this was something that came in the area new and experimented with by our Kanpur boy Rohit.
This is the traditional tea prepared by Chaayos hygienically and packed in stand-up pouches with spouts. Later on, that spouted pouch is put into a kind of cost-effective insulated box of micro fluted cartons having a spout popping out with simple easy to carry & easy to pour handle. Chaayo-flask Interestingly this came in easy-to-carry brown bags with 4 numbers of earthen pots: the traditional way of having tea and that is also environment friendly. I loved the tea and was proud to be a packaging technologist as this happened only because of packaging that someone could implement his nice idea.
I wish all the success to #chaayos Its name is also nice as I guess it comes from the Indian name Chai for tea.
