Plastics used for baby food packaging found to release large numbers of microparticles when microwaved

Over the past several years, scientists around the world have found that plastics break down into tiny particles that contaminate the environment. Microplastics have been found in plants and in the bodies of animals and humans. In this new effort, the researchers noticed that many baby foods are now packaged in small, plastic pouches that can be conveniently heated in a microwave oven. Some are even marketed as organic, implying that they are healthier than other foods. The team members explored what happens to the plastic when it is heated in a microwave.

The work being carried out by the Plastics Initiative uses future visualisation and analytical modelling to show how scaled reuse systems can perform economically, environmentally, and experientially in comparison to single-use.

To ultimately decouple plastic use from business growth, we need scalable solutions that don’t require single-use packaging to deliver products to users. Ambitious reuse policies are increasing, but the road to scaling reuse from niche to norm is still hard to imagine.

Displai aims to enable augmented reality packaging

Australia-based augmented reality (AR) platform for product packaging Displai has announced a programme to enable augmented reality packaging.

Consumers can scan products with a smartphone to activate ‘virtual experiences’, as well as access product information and exclusive content.

The programme also reportedly offers access to Displai’s proprietary AR software, training and support, as well as co-marketing opportunities.

Amcor, Ron Rubin Winery Launch 100% rPET Wine Bottle

Amcor Rigid Packaging (ARP) and Ron Rubin Winery have commercialized a 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) wine bottle. The companies worked together to develop the screw-top bottle, which features a silicon oxide (SiOx) barrier coating.

The winery recently launched its new line of Blue Bin wines, which includes 2022-vintage Vin Rosé, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc, in the 750-mL rPET bottle.

Ace Glass to build US glass recycling plant

The first phase of the plant, scheduled to be operational in early 2024, will involve the installation of processing equipment to make cullet from collected glass.

Glass cullet is used in a variety of applications, such as being remanufactured into lightweight aggregate, consumer glass containers, and repurposed into the production of fiberglass products.

The second phase will include the production of ultra-lightweight foamed glass aggregate which will be used in road construction projects across Arkansas.

Cracking open the potential of eggshell packaging
