Starbucks, Huhtamaki partner on compostable cold cups

Finland-based packaging company Huhtamaki is helping Starbucks launch new fiber-based, compostable cups for cold beverages in select locations. 

The compostable cups and lids initially will roll out in 24 stores, based on local mandates, and more markets are likely to be added in the future, a Starbucks spokesperson said via email. Starbucks confirmed that Huhtamaki is a partner on this project. Huhtamaki, which has more than a dozen U.S. locations, declined to comment on specific customer partnerships.

Graphic Packaging International and Zelestra Sign Agreement to Add Renewable Electricity to the European Grid

The renewable electricity generated by two of Zelestra’s solar projects to be built in Spain – José Cabrera and Socovos II – will have a combined total capacity of 83 megawatts (MWdc). Graphic Packaging expects to receive renewable energy attribute certificates1 corresponding to approximately 86 percent of the solar projects’ output.

WestRock Announces New Corrugated Box Plant Construction in Wisconsin

WestRock Company has announced plans to construct a new corrugated box plant in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, to meet the increasing demand from customers in the Great Lakes region. The new facility will replace the existing plant in North Chicago upon completion.

This investment aims to enhance WestRock’s production capabilities and improve its cost efficiency in the Great Lakes region. The construction is projected to cost around $140 million, with partial offset from property sales.

A Coca-Cola bottler is set to replace 200,000 pounds of plastic annually by adopting WestRock's paper packaging solution.

Liberty Coca-Cola Beverages, the local Coca-Cola bottler for Philadelphia, New Jersey, and New York City, is partnering with WestRock , a leading provider of sustainable paper and packaging solutions, to implement a paperboard carrier that will replace plastic rings for multipack bottled beverages. This collaboration will see WestRock's PETCollar Shield Plus paper-based packaging used at Liberty's Philadelphia production facility for Coca-Cola’s top brands.

GAIA Biomaterials receives US compostability certificate for limestone-based bioplastic

BPI provides third-party verification of whether an item meets ASTM’s compostability standards. It is also a method for ensuring that all claims of compostability are supported by scientific evidence, as requested by the FTC.

The current BPI Certification mark covers Biodolomer for film applications. More certification processes are underway.

"We have been producing Biodolomer for nine years", says CEO Peter Stenström. "Unlike many other bioplastics, it does not use materials grown on farmland. It is based on limestone, one of the most common materials on the planet."

Suzano Eyes Higher Bid for International Paper Amid Investor Concerns and Ongoing DS Smith Acquisition"
