Putting starch into bio-based polymer makes bioplastics more compostable

A team led by Rafael Auras has made a bio-based polymer blend that's compostable in both home and industrial settings. The work is published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

"In the U.S. and globally, there is a large issue with waste and especially plastic waste," said Auras, MSU professor and the Amcor Endowed Chair in Packaging Sustainability.

Less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled in the U.S. That means the bulk of plastic waste ends up as trash or litter, creating economic, environmental and even health concerns.

The all-new CDS Case De-Stacker, significantly reduces the duty on operators loading cases into fully automated case packing machines and reduces the repetitive manual handling demand by automatically de-stacking cases and delivering them to the case packing machine. The CDS is designed to de-stack both RPC and cardboard cases of all standard sizes in either orientation on the same machine, utilising quick change tooling and a recipe driven control system.

Scientists turn banana peels into eco-friendly packaging

Why bananas?
Bananas are a common fixture on dinner tables around the world. However, there are millions of tons of peels that get discarded annually and go unnoticed. 

Dr. Srinivas Janaswamy, the lead author of the study, posed a thought-provoking question: “Many of us consume at least one banana a day. After enjoying the delicious fruit, we discard the peel. What if we could find a use for the peel that helps eliminate plastic waste?”
