Berry Bramlage has won German Packaging Awards in the Sustainability category for significant design and technical enhancements to two packaging solutions. Two years after the Berry Global acquisition of RPC, the combined expertise of these two packaging leaders is paying off with continued sustainability innovation.
The Lip Care stick and Magic Star Light were praised by the judging panel for their move to a mono-material pack, which both improves recyclability and reduces their weight, while maintaining full functionality and consumer convenience.
The design of the Lip Care stick has been optimised from a 4-part assembly with a polyoxymethylene (POM) piston to a 3-part version with a polypropylene (PP) piston. As well as being easier to recycle thanks to all components now being made from PP, the new 3-part construction is lighter than its previous generation.
At the same time, the stick can be specified in two versions, with a 2.5 turn for a slow opening and a 0.75 turn for a faster opening, both of which ensure precise control to avoid any breaking of the lipstick or balm.
The Magic Star Light has similarly replaced a metal spring in the dispenser head with a PP version, which has been developed and produced as a mono-material pack. This has resulted in a significant weight reduction for the new all-plastic package.
These enhancements have been achieved while maintaining the existing benefits of the Magic Star design, which ensures accurate and controlled dispensing of even the most viscous creams with up to 96% residual emptying, whilst also providing protection of sensitive formulae from oxygen ingress.
“As a leader in design for circularity, we are delighted to win these prestigious awards,” commented Thierry Bernet, Circular Economy Director for Berry. “They are a fitting endorsement of our commitment to develop packs that maximise the many benefits of plastics while minimising their impact on the environment.”
Organised by the German Packaging Institute (DVI), the German Packaging Awards are Europe’s largest showcase of packaging achievements. This year a total of 52 innovations from six countries have been recognised. The awards will be presented at Fachpack in September.

Chevigny-Saint-Sauveur, France, 5 August 2021 – Benvic announces the acquisition of the US-based Chemres, a leading provider of polymers, custom compounds and solutions for a variety of industries including medical, packaging, wire & cable.
Headquartered in Princeton (New Jersey) and with operations in Chesapeake (Virginia), Chemres is a specialty compounder with a strong position in the US contact lens market and it also has long-term customer relationships in the medical, wire & cable, and packaging industries. The company provides a high level of dedicated customer service as well as logistical and supply chain management expertise.
The combination with Chemres will allow Benvic to enter the US market and strengthen its exposure to the medical sector, allowing Benvic to become a key global supplier in this market. Benvic will combine its track record of supplying highly innovative solutions with the expertise of Chemres in the North American marketplace and its strong customer portfolio. The acquisition of Chemres is the ninth ‘add-on’ acquisition since Benvic joined Investindustrial’s portfolio in 2018. Among the others, in 2019 Benvic acquired Modenplast Medical, an Italian compounder, specialising in medical grade vinyl compounds and tubing extrusion. This was followed in 2020 with the acquisition of Luc & Bel, an Italian manufacturer which specializes in the design and manufacture of medical device components, and in 2021 with the acquisition of selected TPE and PP compounding assets from Celanese.
The management team of Chemres, led by Chemres’ founder Paul Keimig, are partnering with Benvic to lead Benvic’s growth in North America.
Luc Mertens, CEO of Benvic Group, said: “like Benvic, Chemres is a top performer in the compounding industry; out-performing competitors in growth, quality and client satisfaction. Our shared culture for performance and innovation will enable us to develop new business and technical synergies, and provide us with an exciting strategic opportunity in the US market. We look forward to work closely with the management team of Chemres in the coming years to expand our operations in North America and grow our polymer expertise across sectors and in particular in the medical sector. This acquisition is an important step forward in Benvic becoming a global leader in compounding."
Paul Keimig, CEO of Chemres, said: “Chemres is excited to partner with Benvic in order to accelerate our growth as well as provide additional value for our customers. Benvic’s proven success in similar markets and the desire to use Chemres to grow its portfolio in the US market was key in our decision making process. With Benvic’s vision to be the global leader, Chemres will accelerate its growth through organic and additional compounding acquisitions in the US market. Together, Benvic Group, through Chemres, will have unparalleled, global capabilities in the compounding world.”

The development of the aluminum tubes and aerosol can market in the first half of 2021 can only be adequately assessed for the German market in retrospect to 2020 because the first quarter of 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis was still characterized by extremely lively demand from all end consumer markets.
Food and household sectors stable in the crisis, pharmaceuticals mixed, cosmetics weaker
In the course of the crisis, however, deliveries to the cosmetics market, which dominates in terms of volume, declined significantly due to mobility restrictions and temporary closures of hairdressing salons, beauty and care studios and duty-free shops in airports. The demand for deodorants and hair colours fell noticeably, with the hair colour segment weakening particularly in the first quarter of 2021.
Deliveries to the food and household sectors even went up significantly against the trend during this period. In contrast, demand from the pharmaceutical market was mixed because drug prescriptions went down due to the decline in doctor visits during the pandemic.
In view of these pandemic-related developments, the total decrease in deliveries in the industry which amounted to 7 percent in the first half of 2021 is still moderate.
Reliability of aluminum packaging manufacturers in difficult times
Customers' plans are still extremely short-term and volatile, which demands a high degree of flexibility in production planning from packaging manufacturers. The tube and aerosol can industry is worried about the still unusually high prices for raw materials such as aluminum, plastic, cardboard, wood, coatings, printing inks and for transport services, which have led to considerable cost increases in the industry.
"In some areas there has been a significant shortage of materials, which in some cases made cost-intensive stock-building in the packaging industry necessary in order to ensure the delivery reliability of this system-relevant industry," says Johannes Schick, chairman of GDA’s tubes, cans and extruded parts division. “In this way, out-of-stock situations could also be avoided for the customers of the tube and can manufacturers. As in the entire crisis, the packaging industry has delivered in the truest sense of the word and has distinguished itself as a reliable partner in the supply chain even under the most difficult market conditions,” added Schick.
Overall, the outlook for the industry for the rest of 2021 is cautiously optimistic, despite the spreading delta variant and a decreasing willingness to vaccinate. The brightening mood and confidence in the population should fuel consumption in the next few months, so that in 2021 at least the result of last year could be achieved.

Internationally-patented PalletWrap™ is cost-effective, fully recyclable and requires no modification to existing pallet wrapping machinery.
Bristol, CT – HexcelPack, a developer of eco-friendly, paper-based protective cushioning solutions to replace bubble packaging and other plastic or foam-based materials, has introduced PalletWrap™, an innovative 100% paper-based pallet wrapping material. A cost-effective and sustainable shipping solution, PalletWrap™ is a fully-recyclable, plastic-free alternative to traditional pallet wrapping material.
Developed with high-tension PowerStretch™ technology designed specifically for pallet use, PalletWrap™ provides maximum protection and adhesion to ensure integrity of goods during transport. The solution utilizes a new variation of HexcelPack’s groundbreaking slit paper technology with a unique hexagon slit pattern and eight times more rows of slits than its sister product, HexcelWrap™. This process converts extensible paper into a three-dimensional, internationally patented cushioning product by making precise cuts at specific angles.
As a result, the paper product is able to stretch into shape, maximizing the strength and stiffness of its fibers, creating a much stronger wrap with the ability to nearly double in length.
HexcelPack’s PalletWrap™ is compatible with certain existing automated pallet wrapping equipment, and does not require major modifications or special machinery to integrate. Customers can simply add the new material to their current pallet wrapping equipment and begin use immediately.
Benefits of HexcelPack’s PalletWrap™ include:
Pallet Product Protection: Engineered with PowerStretch™ technology, PalletWrap™ delivers protection and adhesion. Seamlessly integrated onto existing automated pallet machinery, the lightweight, high-stretch material quickly and easily wraps pallets prior to transport.
Sustainability: Completely paper-based, PalletWrap™ is made from 100% “Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)” Canadian Paper for exemplary sustainability and little to no impact on the environment – all while delivering protection to transport goods safely and securely. The paper used to produce PalletWrap™ is fully curbside recyclable and biodegradable.
Return On Investment: Using PalletWrap is as impactful on the bottom line as it is on the environment. Protective, reusable as alternative packaging material, and cost-effective, the system allows retailers to expediently recoup their investment.
“Developing innovative, cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to traditional shipping solutions, without sacrificing product protection, is the core of what we do,” said Lorne Herszkowicz, Partner at HexcelPack. “Our PalletWrap™ with PowerStretch™ technology is backed by years of product development to utilize our slit-paper technology in a completely new way – providing the ideal amount of tension, protection and adhesion needed for pallet wrapping.”
HexcelPack will be demonstrating its cost-effective, sustainable wrapping products for a wide array of product shipping needs at Pack Expo 2021, Booth SU-8425 held September 27-29 in Las Vegas.

IWK TL Series assures safe, reliable product handling while incorporating novel transport system, station flexibility for shifting needs, and quick changeover for minimized downtime.IWK TL Series assures safe, reliable product handling while incorporating novel transport system, station flexibility for shifting needs, and quick changeover for minimized downtime.
Parsippany, NJ – IWK Packaging Systems, Inc., a manufacturer of premium cartoning and tube filling equipment for the pharmaceuticals and health & beauty sectors, has introduced a modular, high-speed top-load cartoning line to meet dramatically increased demands for packaging pre-filled syringes, vials and other delicate pharma containers. The company’s IWK TL Series arrives amid continued efforts to produce billions of additional COVID-19 vaccine doses, and offers a slew of benefits not typically found in conventional top-load cartoning equipment.
Most importantly, the IWK TL Series assures safe, reliable product handling designed to virtually eliminate glass-to-glass contact. The machine builds upon IWK’s reputation for cGMP-guaranteed, floorspace-conscious equipment with quick tool-free changeover, exemplary cleanability and easy line clearance.
Among other notable highlights, the IWK TL Series incorporates an intelligent transport system that is not typically found in top-load units. Instead of requiring a fixed distance between carton holders, customers get an individually adaptable setup; this allows for a variable number of items per function, simplifying operation significantly. Secure carton holding is assured throughout via mechanical hold and, since the system does not use vacuum belts or conveyors, risk of breakage-caused contamination is mitigated. Features such as these are derived from the company’s embrace of emerging technologies to bring advanced capabilities to customers in the horizontal-load cartoning space.
Another key facet of the IWK TL Series is its unsurpassed modularity – a crucial element as many pharma manufactures continue experiencing evolving production needs. The series’ monoblock design allows for mixing and matching various stations per product-specific needs, including product feeding, carton erection and divider insertion units prior to transport to end-of-line closure, reject and discharge modules. Marking can be performed via inkjet or laser printing, and quality control features include code reading and presence verification for both products and inserts.
The IWK TL Series can form and fill carton from 90-180mm in length, 50-150mm in width and 15-80mm in height, based on carton flats from 150-500mm long and 150-400mm wide. Depending on box size and insert parameters, the machine can produce up to 120 completed cartons per minute – considered top-speed in a sector that has experienced surging demand.
“The new IWK TL Series of top-loaders is a product of IWK’s 75-year roots in the cartoning machinery industry – the longest legacy of any major company,” said Bernie Conlon, Managing Director of IWK Packaging Systems, Inc. “That experience allows us to adapt quickly to evolving industry needs, including the current demand for premium top-loading machinery for high-leverage, delicate pharmaceuticals containers like pre-filled syringes and glass vials.”
The IWK TL Series also helps IWK synergize with fellow subsidiaries under parent company ATS Automation. In particular, IWK sister company ATS Life Sciences manufactures a variety of medical devices and diagnostics items for which top-load cartoning is required.
